The HD 555 open, dynamic stereo headphones feature a special internal surround reflector. It generates an extended, spatial sound field, making this model the ideal headphones for home cinema as well as music. Many innovative features such as E.A.R. technology and optimised Duofol diaphragms deliver a whole new level of audio reproduction.

It started a couple of weeks after I got them, small cracks started appearing in the light coloured plastic just above the earcups (where they meet the dark coloured headband). These cracks got worse and worse and then pieces of plastic started falling off revealing the interior of the headband.
I look after all my equipment and these 'phones have just had normal use (listening to music on my computer), they have never been outside, never been dropped, they don't have a mark on them. They are immaculate, apart from the fact they are just disintegrating before my eyes. At this rate a couple more months and they'll be completely broken.
There's obviously some kind of a design flaw that means there is an unbearable stress on that part of the plastic. Either that or I simply got a rogue unit.
Whatever, I have returned them for a refund and will be getting something (hopefully more) robust.
Time Used: Over One Year
I will start by saying I am not an audiophile or someone who knows the difference between the really good pair of headphones and the really great pair. What I do know is which headphones sound good for listening to music, playing video games, and just casual listening to movies and videos. I searched through a lot of reviews and eventually decided to buy a pair of these things, granted they were only $100 at the time, but even at this price range the payout is easily noticed.
* Sound quality is bar none to any headphones I have previously used
* Ear pieces are extremely comfortable and after wearing them for a few minutes, I forget they are on my head
* Comes with a very long cord which is great since sometimes the audio port can be far from the device. For instance, when trying to listen through my audio box for my piano, the box itself is far enough from the piano where the long cord comes in handy
* Clarity is so high I can hear the pitch changes and also where the audio recording was scrubbed or altered that normally cannot be seen
* Comes with an adapter to fit the 1/4inch stereo jack to a smaller, more "normal" 1/8inch jack
* Does not produce any type of hiss or static when played on higher levels
* Made of fine material and does not seem like it would break easily. The part that sits on top of your head is strong and I have actually stepped on them and saw it bend completely over, but it went right back to where it was without a single stretch mark or crack
* When dust gathers on the ear padding, it can easily be pulled off
* Came packaged in a neat, tight box free of damage
* Easy to
* The price can be a little steep since at the time of this review it is listed at $195, but the money is well worth it (EDIT: Cheaper through Amazon UK. Price is not as bad, so this con might not apply to UK users)
* Even though the long cable is a plus in stationary use, it can be a little long for portable use
* Not much bass to these, but bass seems to drown out the sound quality to me. Plus, I don't listen to rap or songs with a lot of bass
Overall I use the headphones to listen to music, videos, and games on my computer as well as practice my piano through them on my Yamaha P95. They have never messed up, do not have a scratch on them, and work amazing. Classical music is crystal clear through them and I would not trade them for any other set at the moment. Also, there is supposedly a way to turn them into the HD 558 by removing a barrier from the ear piece, but Youtube and Google will have to help you there. Not sure if they are better, but from what I know more people buy these in place of the newer 558s. Buy these, plain and simple. You will not be disappointed.
I am a bit of an audio aficionado (I wouldn't go as far as to say audiophile) and having been a big fan of the Sennheiser brand for many years, I knew from the get-go what brand of cans I was going to buy. There were several options to choose from including the HD595s, but I didn't want to spend too much due to the purpose I would be using them for. In terms of cost, I think these are excellent.
When I first received the 555s in the post, to say I was excited would have been an understatement. I carefully prized them from their beautiful packaging (10/10 for packaging) and was ready to go. My first encounter with the product in use wasn't bad, but I couldn't help but feel a little underwhelmed. The separation of instruments was quite poor and the sound stage seemed unusually small for open headphones, however I was expecting this as all decent headphones need some solid burn-in time. I let them run pretty much constantly over the next few days with a variety of music at a slightly higher volume than I'm used to.
Four days in and it was like listening to a completely different set of headphones. They had really opened up and every musical note sounded cleaner. When watching movies it was like being engulfed in the experience rather than merely viewing it on a screen. Occasionally I found myself looking behind me thinking the sound was coming from behind me when in fact it was from the movie. It's worth mentioning that due to the 'open' design of these cans there will be sound leakage, best to be used privately in a quiet environment. My feelings on the 555s at this point would be described as 'satisfied'.
Moving on to today, almost 2 weeks of constant use later. Have the headphones gotten any better? Worse? Stayed the same? I can confirm that they sound a great deal better! With every day that passes they seem to sound even more beautiful. The soundstage is wide, notes are crisp, dialogue in movies are easily distinguishable and aren't muddled with background noise. These are better than I expected.
Something worth pointing out is that these are only 50ohms, making them very easy to drive. I can comfortably listen to them with my Walkman at a high volume without any distortion or drop off. In a noisy environment, say outdoors, they will not be so good due to their open design. Volume will suffer if they are not used with an amp.
Just in case anyone is curious I do NOT use these with an amp. I use them mainly with my laptop and tv straight from the 3.5mm output and the sound is first class. The build quality is also excellent, I've noticed no weak points and the cable is reassuringly thick (not so much that it is a burden). The price is excellent (I'm surprised they are not priced much higher) for what you get. Another point is the comfort level... Having tried several pairs of headphones over the years these are undoubtedly the most comfortable pair I've tried. They surround your ears and do not cause any pressure, I have wore them for 6+ hours at a time without an issue. I'm trying to find fault with this product but honestly cannot.
Would I recommend these headphones? 100%
