The sound is fantastic. With their closed design, the headphones cut out a lot of the ambient noise in the room. For example, if you have them on while you're at your computer, you won't hear your computer's fan, your fingers typing, or even other people talking. This is great if you want to immerse yourself in a sound experience, and block out everything but what YOU want to listen to. They're also great for older people, who want to hear JUST the TV and nothing else in the room.
The bass on the headphones is very good. And if you tweak the EQ settings of your computer, iPod, CD player, etc, you can get AMAZING bass out of them.
To summarise, Sennheiser are clearly the best brand when it comes to headphones. And these headphones are excellent quality at a very reasonable price. So if you want a comfortable, great sounding, reliable pair of headphones, these are the ones to buy.
I found the sound isolation of the HD212s to be very good, and the problem was solved. The sound was much fuller than my old headphones with lots more bass and treble frequencies, there was greater clarity too.
I used to mix through them too, but I have since progressed to using some budget priced monitors (Behringer MS20) which are much better for mixing as they have a flatter response.
The HD212s are great for pleasure listening. I like Heavy Rock, Blues and some Metal music and the sound is loads better than previous headphones and hi-fi speakers that I've owned in the past.
Overall they are lightweight, comfortable, sound great, have a long enough lead to walk about the room, and are well priced. They are good for recording.
My only complaint is that I would have liked a volume control.
UPDATE August 2010: I still like these headphones and still use them when recording and for listening to music for pleasure. I have since purchased a pair of dearer, monitoring headphones by Audio-Technica which are excellent for mixing and mastering at home, especially as I don't have a proper studio room and record in the corner of the lounge. I am still happy to recommend this product after three years usage.
I like to listen to very varied genres of music - heavy metal, rock, dance and some house and trance from the late 80's & early 90's.
Even though the bass response is excellent there is no loss in treble or mid-range response.
I have been listening to music on my PC as well as my ipod nano (3rd Gen) and the response from these headphones is the same for both.
Sound isolation is also excellent.
I listen to my music with a "flat" equaliser so as to hear the music in it's original state.
Try these headphones with LFO (by LFO - 1990) - fantastic!!!!!
Pros: Very comfortable, lots of bass available(my ears were aching due to the rumbling), light weight. Good for gaming, movies and most types of music.
Cons: Can sound mono very occasionally whereas headphones these days give a 3D stereo sound so it doesn't sound like there is music arriving from all corners of the headphone. Nickel plated jack with oxygen free copper wire increases the resistance and more volume is required like an ordinary headphone.
Conclusion: They do take some getting used too. But truly you will fall in love with these specially if you listen to hip/hop and dance music. These sound just as as good as my 120W sub woofer without the whole house shaking. The deep end bass is present along with the other frequencies(high and mid range). You wouldn't need a 2.1 system(I own a Logitech Z 2300)with these they are just as good!
My budget was £40, and they had to be closed headphones as i wanted them for work.
I looked at several pairs of Sonys, a apir of Goldrings and various other Sennheisers, but am very very glad that i ended up with these.
They don't have the sophisticated sound of some of the open headphones, but they handle music really well for a closed pair.
The bass is very warm, sometimes slightly overpowering, but that is more the music i choose to listen to.
They are really comfy and block out an awful lot of the background noise in an office.
These come higly recommended. Get a pair if you are looking to spend. £30 to £40 pounds.
