I'm fangirl-ing a bit as I write this review, because these are easily the nicest set of headphones I've ever owned. As far as I'm able to tell, these are a version of the hugely popular open HD 598 headphones, updated to include a remote that is designed to work with mobile phones and tablets - introducing headset functionality. These are supplied with 2 interchangeable cables: a long, 3m cable with a 6.3mm plug for use with your home entertainment system, and a shorter 1.2m cable with a 3.5mm plug, plus the inbuilt remote and microphone for use with your phone/tablet. There is in addition a 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter.

The headphones arrive in an expensive-looking box, which opens up to reveal the headphones (with the 3m cable for the 6.3mm plug attached), the 1.2 cable with the 3.5mm plug and remote, and the 3.5mm adaptor plug all nestled in black foam. There's no instructions or warranty information inside the box: but they're headphones and pretty self-explanatory, with nearly all necessary information conveyed on the outside of the box - including the serial number for warranty registration.

The headphones are beautifully made with a cushioney, padded leatherette headband and extremely soft-feeling fabric covers going over my ears. The covers adapt to the frames of my glasses neatly without squashing them into my head, which can be a problem with harder and heavier construction types. They're the most comfortable headphones I've ever tried, and the fit is excellent - with no sign of slippage when moving around (I won't describe what I've been doing as dancing, because it is NOT pretty!). I was initially a bit surprised that these aren't covered in real leather however leather might be a turn off for some customers.Read more ›

I really like these headphones, they're supremely comfortable and have amazing sound, with clarity and presence. They're big as the cups are designed to fit around the ears and they are also open-back so they don't enclose the sound; there is quite a lot of sound leakage, so they are not really suitable for commuting. They are solidly built with a padded headband and velour earpads, unfortunately these aren't removable for replacement if they get worn or damaged. Two interchangeable leads are supplied, a useful 3m one for connection to a hifi and a shorter one for a phone or mp3 player.
I bought a pair of sennheiser HD414 headphones as a student, I used them pretty well daily and loved them, replacing earpads and cables as needed until they finally died after about 35 years, I miss them; these are as good but I doubt they will last as long.
Sound is balanced with good bass, without being overpowering, clear middle and treble, equally at home on rock or classical, the over-ear design gives an immersive sound putting you at the centre of the music. I like them a lot.

comparing with audiotechnica audiotechnica's m50x: the mids are shadowed by the overpowering lows and unnaturally 'metallic' highs. an overall displeasing sound for way too much money. the open design means everyone will know what you're listening to, unusable in an office environment.
the benchmark track for me is 'take five' - david brubeck. this is not a keeper

I have to admit to always being a fan of Sennheiser headphones and my expectations were high. I was not disappointed.

These headphones are simply the closest thing I have ever heard to perfection. The quality of sound is stunning, you are able to hear every single sound clearly and I mean CLEARLY - I listen to all types of music, but mainly classical and to hear a piece of music I have listened to many times with such clarity makes the whole experience of headphone listening rise to a different level. OK so it sounds like I am going over the top somewhat, but believe me, this is not an exaggeration. I listened to "The Lark Ascending" (for the umpteenth time) and was surprised (amazed) to hear it, or should I say, experienced it on a different level. I think one of the main reasons the sound is so amazing is the open backs on the headphones. This makes the sound feel as if it is all around your head and not just inside it. BRILLIANT.

On the practical side, the headphones were very comfortable with the soft foam pads and there were two different length leads in the box. The shorter leads is ideal for listening on your mobile phone/iPod etc, whilst the longer on when listening on your hi-fi set up. It all comes in a well padded box making everything sit safely and snugly. Normally at this point I would point out the negatives, but I cannot find any apart from if you like to listen to heavy bassy music that blows your brain, then perhaps these are too subtle for you. However, if like me, you simply enjoy the experience that listening to music that feeds your emotions and touches your soul, then invest in these and bring your music to life.

I have several sets of headphones, but these outshine the rest.

With ultra-high quality audio and a well-crafted, ergonomic design, Sennheiser's HD 598SRs are a standout set of headphones right up there with the top personal audio equipment I've tested.

They perform extremely well across the frequency range, with exceptional accuracy, depth and richness to sound; some of the best I've heard for orchestral reproduction. Being ultra critical, I'd argue that bass frequencies can be very slightly lacking, perhaps not having quite the same wallop as Bose's close-backed QC35s, for example. But it's a tiny difference, and the ambience created by the open-back design is just wonderful; any audio with echoes or reverb of any kind has a broad, all-encompassing feel to it which seems to extend way outside of the headphones themselves. Listening can be a joyous experience.

They have a lightweight and comfortable construction of no great style, but they're certainly not ugly either. Comfortable even when worn for long periods, the over-ear pieces are cushioned and soft. The adjustable headband is well-designed and doesn't feel hard or taut against the head at all, assisted by a generous cable length. The twist-lock headphone connector is a nice idea for securing the connection to your device so it can't get yanked out easily. That said, it does take quite a lot of force to properly insert the 3.5mm jack, in my opinion.

The open-back nature of these headphones means that noise-cancelling isn't really an option, but if you're in a reasonably quiet environment then this doesn't impact the sound which always has an authentic, even feel to it. They are capable of picking out the subtlest elements of music and really bringing them to your attention.

At a very fair price point and with prodigious audio reproduction, they should definitely be on your short-list.
