Top customer reviews
There is a depth and space to the sound that the AKG's never had, whilst also having a remarkable amount of detail. Worthy of note - these headphones like to be driven quite hard, and if you don't have a gutsy enough amp behind them, they sound a bit lacklustre; however, assuming that your amp is capable of supplying enough power, you will not be disappointed.
I bought the Sennheisers to replace them.
They came nicely packaged - a novelty that wears off quickly :)
The first thing I noticed is that the connector is the 6.3mm (larger) type with one of those big, clunky, rigid adaptors to shrink it down to 3.5mm.
Can you imagine this arrangement plugged into your phone? You'll wreck it in two seconds flat (your phone that is). Maybe these aren't phone phones.
Fortunately my amp takes 6.3mm and this is where they will usually live.
My setup is the high def audio out on a GTX780 into the optical in on a Sherwood RD-6103R. Not exactly audiophile stuff, but not too tatty.
Dire Straits - Private investigations.
All present and correct.
Radiohead - Paranoid android
Clear enough to hear the background voice… almost!
Amy Winehouse - Me and Mr. Jones
These cans love her, I ended up listening to the whole album.
Babybird - Atomic Soda
Punchy enough and with the subtleties
Steeley Dan - Glamour profession
I know what you're thinking: "Who listens to Steely bloody Dan?", well I do because they set their levels totally flat, their a good test for sound equipment. Sounded accurate.
Paul Weller - Various tracks
Mainly because I like listening to Paul Weller.
At full chat they get a bit rumbly and clipping is a problem. The "S" becomes the "SH".
Let's not mess about; when you turn them right up they go to pieces so quick people nearby get hit by the shrapnel.
Is this a problem to me? Not really.
This failure happens way up loud, remember the guy with the cockroach mic in the 5th Element? LOUD loud. My old aviators used to cope much better but if I listened to them at peak volume for any length of time I'd go deaf anyway.
The Sennheisers are obviously aimed at more civilised listening and they do this very well, there's nothing too awry.
Some headphones just have frequencies that are just absent, but not these.
Just ever so slightly bass heavy but nice and warm and just ever so slightly flat - you know when the acoustic guitar could be a tad brighter. The former can be fixed with your audio controls. The latter cannot. Fortunately they aren't dull enough to annoy me, it's a minor effect.
Everything I have chucked at them has sounded fine. Punchy punches, nice high end and acceptable vocals. They also sound nice and "open" and not like you're wearing headphones at all.
The cable seems chunky and well made and maybe the 6.3mm jack will last longer than the 3.5 on the Skullcandy pair, who knows. It's also long enough for me to do away with the coiled extension I used to use - another plus.
The best bit about the cable is that it's detachable and hence replaceable should it fail.
Comfort wise, the cups are great and the headband is very good (Skullcandy scores "great" and "great", they must have known the shape of my lumpy head)
For the record, my ears are in their late forties and have been subjected to years of motorbike rides and live rock concerts, so if you have unblemished younger ears, this review may not be suitable for you
I like them.
These headphones are BIG – earcups measure 110 x 85 x 20 -- truly over ears; the most comfortable headphones I have ever tried.
I use these with my Fiio X1 DAP without a headphone amp. They also work directly out of my Samsung smart phone and KindleFire HDX without the need for a headphone amp, as well as from my computer.
I am not an audiophile so cannot really describe the sound in any meaningful way. My go-to headphones were the Symphonized Wraith 2.0 which are a closed-back design. Even I can hear a noticeable improvement over the sound quality of those. Being open-back, these HD599s are no good for listening while other people are around; but I knew that before I bought them so that is not a complaint from me.
Value for Money:
I have seen these described as “the top end of just below audio-quality headphones”. I am delighted with them but I don’t think they are worth three-times-the-price of the Symphonized Wraith 2.0. If the price included a Sennheiser-branded case, then maybe. Hence only 4 stars.
What I like:
• The ivory/brown colour is beautiful;
• These really are “over-ear” headphones; the cups are huge – and comfortable;
• The high-quality, substantial detachable cables – 1 x 3m x 6.35mm jack; and 1 x 1.2m x 3.5mm jack.;
What I like less:
• No case supplied.
• I already had a spare case ready to replace the rather worn one on my Sennheiser HD201 which my grandson uses when he comes around. It is a snug and perfect fit for the HD599 so the HD201 will have to limp on a little longer in the battered case.
• I couldn’t resist the temptation to purchase the replacement 1.2m cable by KetDirect in a beautiful copper colour. This is a thicker and more substantial cable than the original black Sennheiser cable, but not an essential purchase.
