I was umming and arring between these and the 558's. Apparently these have better bass and the higher range isnt too different to the 558 so went with these.
Now in terms of the sound they are superb, no complaints at all, loud, good bass oomph and clear as well, plugged into my pc and no amplifier needed.
In terms of comfort they feel compared to my old headphones heavy on my head and also the ear pads feel hard fitting, my old headphones I didnt feel like was wearing them, I think this is due to the padding material. I suspect as I wear them in this will improve but due to the material (makes me wish I got 558s which have same material as old headphones now) it will probably never feel the same.
The jack connector is a design mistake I feel, it by default has a large jack connector and comes with a adaptor for the 3.5mm jack, given that 90% of devices that this will be used with will probably have 3.5mm thats a bad design choice, also that the adaptor is not smaller in diameter to the larger connector meaning if plugging in a small area between other cables like on my soundcard there isnt enough space and wont, luckily I also ordered a splitter with this which is a cable splitter meaning when I plug this into the splitter its in open space and so fits.
But the wire has a fault, whenever I move it a little the left speaker will stop working. Over time it got worse also, I messaged the seller 8 days ago hoping to see what can be done about it. But they haven't replied yet. looking for, but just hope that it doesn't arrive with a fault. :)
Firstly these are Hi-Fi headphones, this is obvious from the packaging and it is reinforced by the 6.3mm jack at the end of the generous cable length. Obviously Hi-Fi first and foremost, a smaller 3.5mm adapter is included for portable devices like iPods etc and these headphones do work perfectly fine on such devices.
Out of the box these headphones do not deliver their true potential, they need at least 10 hours of use before they start to perform, and perform they certainly do!
I have used these with a large range of music, pop, rock, indie, dance, jazz all from the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's right through to today's commercial stuff.
The sound is best described as on the warm side of neutral, a good trait for headphones which are likely to be used on varying types of equipment. The bass is very powerful and well extended, yet controlled. In fact the bass is the strongest asset of these headphones. That doesn't mean they are all bass and nothing else, there is still lots of detail in the midrange and treble. The differences in quality between recordings is very obvious due to the detail and clarity on offer. The treble is always sweet and smooth rather than crisp and fizzy and the lower midrange seems slightly dominant over the rest of the midrange, but again it lends itself to an overall pleasant experience which makes everything easy too listen to. Nothing ever sounds harsh or fatiguing through these headphones, they just draw you in for hours of pleasure. Stereo imaging is superb it's like the kind of soundstage you would expect from good speakers.
These headphones will show up poorly produced music, revealing the distortion and compression on many rock/indie tracks for example, yet such tracks are still entirely listenable due to that warm weighty bottom end and smooth treble.
I have used these headphones with a couple of midrange NAD Hi-Fi amps, a fairly high end Sony CD player and an iPod touch, the performance of these headphones is consistent with every device, a smooth, refined and powerful presentation of the music.
I should mention to those who want to deafen themselves with silly levels of sound pressure that they can do so with these, they will not distort at any volume.
Comfort wise these are fantastic, you basically fit them to your head and forget they are there. You can listen for hours (which you probably will), and not feel any discomfort from these at all. They are open backed which means sound can leak out to those around you, but given that these are meant to be primarily for domestic Hi-Fi use, I don't see that as much of an issue. If you want headphones for sitting on the bus or train then you're looking at the wrong kind of headphone here! These are not fashion accessories either, comfort and sound come first with these. They do still look attractive in my opinion however.
I've given these 4 stars as I think for £120 - £130 some may prefer a less coloured sound, these are warm sounding and everything sounds attractive through them. So you could argue they aren't an accurate representation of the music. However as I've said everything you throw at these sounds good and you just want to listen for hours. At £80 which they currently are I doubt you could get better to be honest, a full bodied sweet clear sound very comfortable and well made. Some very discerning audiophiles may want more bite in the treble, but 90% of people probably wont. I am very critical of audio products and wholeheartedly recommend these!
