Well what can I say, these are amazing! I have had several headsets over the years and my most recent have all been Sennheiser's - a set of PC 130s, PC 151s and now these. The difference is quite incredible. When I upgraded from a pair of Sony's to my first set of Sennheisers I was blown away at the range of sounds I previously could not hear. I can safely say it is the same from the 151's to the 350's! The depth of sound is fantastic with the full range of noise on the battlefield being easily distinguishable by distance. You can hear footsteps behind you no problems as I could easily hear the attacker's footsteps that got my dog tags last night!! From reading other reviews I was a little concerned with the apparent lack of depth of the bass. For gaming this is simply not the case. The improvement over the PC 151's was quite incredible and the rumble of explosions, tank guns and choppers overhead was top draw.
The build quality is great and although they do fold down somewhat there is always a rather large mike boom to contend which kind of defeats the purpose. The cable is very heavy duty which is great as my 130's died a death due to a cable breakage. I have not tested the microphone so cannot comment on its effectiveness. The circumaural design is also amazing cancelling out a significant amount of ambient noise. Clearly they are not a set of Peltor's for this purpose but they do go a long way to removing other audio clutter that may distract you from fragging the bad guys!!
For music I cannot give a great deal of feedback as I do not use a headset to listen to music. But as a comparison between the 151's and the 350's there is a massive difference. I can see where the comments are coming from regarding the depth of sound as my first test was using them at work with Spotify and they did seem to lack base. I added the base boost and this made a great improvement. In addition adjusting the placement of them on your head made a difference as well as the further your ears are into the cups the stronger the base. This can be borne out by pushing them against your head - shows very quickly that they have excellent base!! I will be getting a sound card for my rig at home and I am sure this will also improve the audio quality.
I think the key to remember here is these are for gaming not music and for that, they are brilliant! I firmly believe you get what you pay for what you get and although expensive, these are top quality!
Anybody want a set of PC 151's?
The headset is very comfortable to wear for extended periods, and I have worn it for five or six hours straight while raiding in World of Warcraft or playing FPS gaames. The cups cover the ears nicely and so I doubt anyone will have any discomfort while using them. SOme may want to check out the 360 versions for the small upgrade you get on the cups, but these are fine and dandy in comfort if you don't want the extra price of the 360's.
The sound quality is also very good, and while some have knocked on the base saying its lacking I can't say I've been overly bothered by it, but then I'm using them on the PC and can adjust things like that to suit, and so certainly if you are using them on the PC with a reasonble sound card I don't see this as being any issue. Along with the good sound quality is very good sound damping as well, so you won't be disburbed by the missus watching the TV, or maybe her yelling at you to stop playing those silly games and come to bed.
Microphone is a nice study one that won't be easy to break unless you are really overly abusive with your headsets, and my guild mates online say sound quality is excellent when I talk. It also has very good noise cancelling on it. Something you see complained about on many other headsets is this issue, but I can sit on voice chat with voice activation with TV on and a fan blowing air at me and the mic only activates when I talk, which to me is useful, and I'm sure to many others, as you don't want to be annoying the people you play with with unwanted sounds activating your mic, or then hearing to much else when it is activated.
Nothing complex in setting up the headset, and the leads are long enough to do reach most places you want near your PC. The lead has mic mute and volume control in convient place, and a clip to attach it to your cloths if you should find its at a length that you tend to accidentally mute it etc to often.
Well worth the price in my book, and i've sworn by Sennheiser for a long time, and they rarely let me down.
They do really feel comfortable on and the microphone recording more than good enough for gaming.
If I had not had my old Sennheiser HD 500 headset to compare them too I probably would have accepted the Sennheiser PC 350 headset. Music can be so much better than the Sennheiser PC 350 headsets feeble attempt.
I was thoroughly disappointed especially considering the price.

The higher impedance of these also makes it easier on the equipment and lower on the noise (lower impedance = higher introduced noise; downside is lower power output capability from the same amp (unless it has a multi-voltage-rail type design, but that's another topic).) However, the stock on-board sound-card in one of my test rigs was more than capable of still reaching physically painful volumes without any trouble and have room left on the knob. With higher-end, more potent sound-cards or external setups, lots of room left on the knob.
Still, every person hears differently so you can't go by anyone's opinions but your own. (The average person starts to have a high-frequency fall-off in their early middle age, for example. I do not (yet) but take extra special care of my hearing wearing earplugs where many people do not.) But for an SQ buff like me, these are beyond good, well into very nice. Not perfect, but what is...
Those 'other' gaming sets (and honestly, I've tried them all) and other tiny-multi-speaker sets that try to do a 5.1 setup can not truly hold a candle to the sound quality of these (and you don't need those for 5.1 type sound. I play competitive FPS with these and can easily tell right where everything is without question).
As for the mic; everyone continually asks me what mic I'm using cause I sound so clear and crisp and precise. Since buying these, about half of my regular competition have done the same. All with the same opinions of comfort and quality save one (He's about deaf anyhow honestly. He found them bland but he has the above for-mentioned problem to a rather extreme so he likes very bright sounding speakers to make up the difference for his actual ears. Again, just an example of human differences and how no two people will ever hear exactly the same.)
Comfort, very good, not great. I can play for about 6 hours without too much problem thuogh. After that I have to take them off for a while. But I've found that to be pretty much true of all over the ear or on the ear sets. I'm worried about the longevity of the ear padding material but only time will tell that. I actually wish they had a width selector instead of just the arch effect and springs of the cups. But it's working ok. Tiny bit weak on the bottom. I've seen a few people actually strap them around to snug them up but I'm fine without that step. Doing so however does bring out the lower frequencies even more-so. So, some difference of hearing can simply be due to how they sit on your head. They are very adjustable, but.. Just that one thing missing. I've tried the strap myself, and it works great. But honestly I'm just too lazy. Still without it they are still exceptional in almost every way.
It would also be nice if the mic could be switched to the other side as my hardware is on the right. Mic is on the left and so is the cabling. Cables are plenty long but... still... It would also be nice if they could collapse cup to cup to keep dust or what not out of the speaker areas, but they fold both up into the top so the speaker cups point in the same direction. Another tiny point but something to note.
Volume control and mic mute are just a hair too far down the wire for me. But if you want to tuck the wire into your jacket or something for a long battle session, then it's too short so, unless they make it movable, no winners there. In the end it's very functional with almost no scratch effect and the mic mute works without the notorious bump some give ya when triggered.
Even though it's generally not necessary with the good equipment, I go through a break-in period for all of my equipment before trying to rate them just to make sure any build stiffness is out and they are working normally. I also use them normally at very low volume levels due to my sensitive hearing. Even at these low volumes, they sound wonderful and that's actually saying something. The human ear will tend to 'like' louder (to a point obviously) sounds when comparing different sounds so doing comparisons at lower volumes can give you more truth to what 'you' like. A little test I like to do for myself is how quiet I still like them. Under extremely low power (volume), some speakers change their response characteristics a bit. These sing to me all the way down to 'off'.
Part of my problem being a gamer but being so picky was I never liked my 'gaming' headsets. I spent way too much money trying to find a set I could live with. These are the exception. Not only can I live with them, I like them very much. To make sure my opinion didn't change over time, I even waited over 6 months before posting this review and continued shopping for the perfect gaming set. Right now, I'm stopping and just keeping these. Nothing has come close to the whole package.
All in all, a wonderful product. For the price, near impossible to best. Or at least no one has done it yet. In the end overall quality will depend in your listening tastes, quality of your hearing, and the size/shape of your head. But Sennheiser is known for quality sound reproduction, and these do not disappoint. Could you do better? Sure. You'll most likely spend quite a bit more too. I don't rate max points very often. But these really deserve it.
Update: Jan 2016 - These are STILL GOING. I've replaced the cup pads twice, the top pad has worn out completely but it's not affecting the comfort too much. But the sound both in and out is still beautiful. I've actually worn out the 3.5mm connector in my PC from changing it so often from speaker to headset. I wear them while working and playing most days. So much so that my kids (unfortunately) are used to seeing me in them and come over and grab them to be like Daddy. If for nothing else, they've lasted, pure and simple, and still sound great doing it.
Backlog: I have both a big head (12.5 inch circumference!) and I wear glasses. Both my large cranium and glasses usually do not mesh well, actually at all, with gaming headsets. With my previous gaming headset (Logitech clear chat) I could game for about 1-2 hours before brewing a massive headache, then I would have to switch to my lame 2 desktop speakers. I was in desperate need of a comfortable gaming headset that had great sound and great mic quality.
Enter Sennheiser PC 350 Gaming Headset:
Extremely comfortable; I have had the headset for about three weeks. Don't let this fool you on testing. I am a college student with lots of time on my hands! Over the last three days I have put in 15 hour gaming sessions, per day, (Mass Effect 2~ I was sucked in!!) and I didn't have to re-adjust or take off the headset once. The cushions on these puppies are thick, VERY sound dampening, and plush. My ears (also large) fit nicely in the cups without any contact. The ear cups (don't know what to call them) completely envelop my ears and create a nice seal (even with my thick nerd glasses). The headset is very adjustable; the ear cups swivel, and articulate in many positions to fit against your head. The head strap has many different levels of adjustment, to raise or lower the ear cups on your head. The microphone is also conveniently adjustable; a majority of the mic arm is made of hard plastic, but a portion of the arm is made of a highly flexible rubber which allows for nice positioning of the mic (Also when not using the mic it can be swung into a 'out of the way' upright position). The mic, and all of the headset for that matter, is of excellent build quality. The sound is AWESOME! :D The highs are crisp, and the bass is very deep (deepest I have heard from a headset, and I have professional Sony studio headsets). As I said before the ear cups are very sound dampening. My wife three feet from me cannot get my attention without tapping me on my shoulder. (~I read about the level of sound dampening in previous reviews and they were totally right: the headset is so quiet that your house could be burning down and you wouldn't know it) My wife sits next to me on her computer with her music blasting, and I can delightfully sight next to her and not have to listen to it. ;) Basically the sound dampening provided from the nicely sealed thick ear cups is excellent!
Conclusion:
I researched the heck out of this headset, and many others; This is my personal winner, and in my opinion, one of the best headsets out. I always base my decisions upon user's reviews and professional online reviews. I am happy to say that the Sennheiser PC 350 Gaming Headset is the nicest, high quality headset, that I have ever owned. I am also pleased to tell those of you reading this review that this headset is most worthy of your purchase.
I hope this helps those of you needing user input and opinion. Best of luck on your purchase ;)
~Pat
