Another contributing factor might be that the bass isn't particularly pronounced. Personally I don't need bass to be so loud as to override all the rest of the music, so I thought initially this wouldn't be a problem. After a while it may just be one of the reasons I keep turning the volume up as if there's something missing - the bass, that's what!
I'm still giving these 4 stars because the sound quality is good - none of the above disadvantages were apparent to me at first, except maybe that these headphones were a bit quiet. After plugging in my old beaten-up Philips set while on holiday, though, the difference became audible all of a sudden. Particularly on a gaming laptop with a better than average sound card, the Sennheisers SHOULD be blowing me away. I'm not sure whether the performance has started degrading bit by tiny bit over time or if it just took me a while to notice how subdued the sound was, but either way that's the reason why I'm only rating these as good, not great.
Overall still a good, comfortable-to-wear product with nicely accurate sound quality. Preferences are subjective and someone else might well find this the perfect sound for them - but if you're into dynamism and like a certain "punch" to your music and media, these aren't the best choice. It's back to the headphone hunt for me!
What a mistake that was. These are BAD, other commenters have mentioned there's no bass, that's absolutely true, what that means in practice is you can barely hear anything without jacking up the volume. When plugged into my computer I had to incease the volume from 14 to 25 to get anywhere close to the effective volume my old headphones had and even then it sounded muted/tinny.
The thing is, those old Sennheiser HD 202's only cost £25 when I bought them a few years ago, so paying £22 for these I expected to get a somewhat similar experience.
Nope, these are just rubbish! Instead I got a pair of AKG K72 Studio Headphones which cost about £10 more than the 201's and actually sound good. They were delivered 20 mins ago and I can actually hear music properly again!
Over time (years) the material on the ear cup cushions does split and start flaking away. If you're looking at a long term purchase I would recommend saving up and going for something like the Sennheiser 558s or a closed back equivalent with felt / cotton / velour ear pads rather than faux leather.
The construction is lightweight but appears strong and after many many hours of use, nothing has broken or fallen off.
The cord is long with a 3.5mm jack on the end, but an adapter is included in the box for the full size socket.
The sound is great for gaming.....with limitations.

So what are the limitations? After using jvc in ear phones for a few years, I bought these senneheisers as I was fed up with grovelling around on the floor looking for dropped ear canal seals with the jvc xx phones.
Tip. Plug them in, set your playlist running on repeat and walk away for a day, you will feel better about them when they have loosened up. Initially I found the sound a little flat and disappointing, but it has improved with use.
Clarity is great, separation is great and overall the sound is good for most music types, albeit I feel they seem a little dead when listening to techno and rock, the drumbeats are a little woolly at times, although the mid range is great.
For portable devices, or pc use, you will need a headphone amp to get the best out of them as the typically low audio output power on these devices means the volume will not be very high and the sound will be a little flat, earbuds require far less power to drive them.
Disappointed with the sound, I bought an earphone amp from amazon and what can I say other than what a transformation, bass response is better and the overall sound to use a visual analogy, is like looking at a bed of pebbles at the bottom of a crystal clear lake.
So take the trouble to bed them in first and use a headphone amplifier, the battery and built in amp on your portable device will love you for it and you will appreciate the far punchier sound quality.
My opinion overall is that for the price you cannot buy better and with the sennheiser brand name too. One star dropped for having to use a twenty quid external amp on my pc to get em to crank up LOUD.
Had these phones for a couple of months now and absolutely love them, my JVCs are now redundant. Very highly recommended if used in conjunction with an amplifier when using to listen to music on your phone ect.
