Product Description

Review

"A fine nautical adventure, a rattling yarn in the best tradition of navy fiction." "Birmingham Mail""

"The adventures ashore and afloat are as brilliantly pictured as the general plot is cleverly conceived. Character-drawing, action, Rolfe's conquest of his worse self--all go to make much more than a notable thriller." "Birmingham Post"" --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Book Description

A classic of naval fiction from 'the master of the modern sea story'.

I first read this story more than 20 years ago, forgot how much I enjoyed it, for any Ex RN readers the description of shipboard life and the culture of the Royal Navy especially those who served in the Immediate post war and Cold War days will resonate vividly.

Great read for men of all ages, nobody writes naval fiction like Douglas Reeman.

Used to read Douglas Reeman a lot when younger and they were good reads albeit sometimes a little predictable; poor/hurt/damaged (mentally) lead, finds romance, then loses something but they were always had several sub-stories that kept you interested and it was an escape.

However, having returned to them after reading modern novels they appear somewhat at odds, possibly because they reference things like honour, loyalty, trust, good manners etc which do not appear to be as common in the current world but which we could do with more of.

Once again what can I say about this author, the story speaks of the time with the communist chine expanding its territory and the cold brutal way it does it with complete disregards to human suffering. Also the typical colonial attitude of the wealthy English who think they are masters of all they dominate regardless of the suffering of the local people who in the end turn on them with justified fury. A brilliant read.

Although shown as WW2 Naval fiction this book is set following WW2. Still a good read though with all the usual Douglas Reeman writing style plots throughout the book.

One of the classics from this much loved author, well worth the money for hours of intrigue at the twists and turns of the story.
