I've been looking for an "advanced cognitive therapy" self-help book for some time. This is that book. It is not an easy book to read or understand - it's a course text for first-year college students, and is thick with strange terminology. I've not seen, however, anything to keep with this for scientific rigour or for sheer density of ideas and guidance. It will repay careful study and diligent application.

The writing style is praiseworthy in itself - the authors do a marvellous job of speaking to the reader as an intelligent peer, rather than an inferior. Not many self-help books manage that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Want to change your behavior? Start here. 2 Sept. 2009
By Edwin R. Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This delightful book on self-control is a largely undiscovered jewel. I have read over thirty books on life coaching and not one of those books mentions this lovely volume. Given that Watson & Tharp put forward a research based program of self-modification and given that life coaching is generally lacking it is presentation of supporting evidence, this oversight needs to be corrected. As behavioral learning theorists, Watson & Tharp address multiple skills that are needed to successfully change your own behavior. They look at how to measure your behavior; they examine how to set goals and subgoals; they stress the importance of overlearning, of being specific, and of looking at antecedents and consequents of behavior. Their discussion of shaping behavior is critical to coaching -- new behavior is best learned through small steps that become habitual and progressively approach the final behavior you seek. They constructively apply the idea of self-reinforcement. Taken as a whole, their model is specific, and their advice for how to go about changing your behavior is practical. Their research confirms that their approach works. The authors see human capacity as primarily open ended, but not in some vague, wishful thinking way. They see the development of self-control as a life long practice dependent on the learning of particular skills. Great book, I can't recommend it too much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent self-help book 29 Nov. 2010

Unlike most self-help books, this one actually works. Everything's in layman's terms so anyone with or without a psychology background can easily understand it. Not to say it isn't strongly grounded in actual empirical research findings. Highly recommend this to anyone look for a long-term change in their habits, behaviors, or even thought patterns. Author has a good sense of humor too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Change guaranteed 25 Dec. 2013
By Robert - Published on Amazon.com

This is THAT BOOK that I wish I'd had read sooner and has all the advice that I wish "I'd had known back then."

First, I gotta thank the author Josh Kaufman and his Personal MBA reading list or else I'd have never heard of or thought of this book, and would still be digesting and burping up a lot of bad and useless self-help literature. I love the fact that this book is on it's 10th edition and being frequently updated with the latest in behavior modification science and what not. This book is jam-packed with scientific studies, cases and proven techniques that work. No fluff here.

Secondly, it's not hard to read at all. Even though it's a textbook, it's not too dry, or dry at all for that matter.

Finally, the stuff works, if you use and apply it. It doesn't promise a magic bullet. There are a lot of techniques and it's recommended that you combine a lot of them. Also, there's no "21-day guarantee." No, some behaviors do take longer to change and with somethings it's going to take more than willpower and 21-days to establish. This book goes into all that. I applied some of the techniques immediately and saw results. For example, now i wake up right when my alarm clock goes off. I distract myself and logically defeat my negative thoughts (and this is even before i offically begin my project). Oh, not to mention this book has me ready to clear at least 10 futile self-help books off of my shelf because this book has now put them to shame.Pick this up if you really wanna change
