I'm actually reviewing the Collected (the Amazon record is mussed up)

'The cat, fed indoors nowadays,
Laps like a watch'

Modest, honest, accessible verses, imbued with mortality - can one reasonably ask for more? The Stevie Smith influence is evident, even before the poem in her memory on page 114. A SS disciple! Who knew?

My personal favourites: Overseas Student p38, The Baptism p59, possibly The Letter p107, Ninny's Tomb p211 and of course the sonnet she places as an epigraph to the collection. There were two further books. High time, I feel, for the definitive Selected - to be read, of course, in conjunction with her splendid autobiography Mrs Beer's House
