Product description

Review

'James Boulton has chosen 330 letters from the massive eight-volume Cambridge edition of well over 5,000, making this substantial selection something like a new addition to the Lawrence canon, a book to have on the shelf alongside The Rainbow and Women in Love.' Independent on Sunday

'We now have the start of an edition in whose scrupulousness there is good reason to place every confidence: the fundamental work will never have to be done again … Cambridge University Press has cooperated nobly: the book is nice to hold, the pages are very well set out and printed and altogether a pleasure to read. In short a job eminently worth doing has been eminently well done.' English

'This invigorating collection … is … a monument to scholarship for which we should be grateful.' D. H. Lawrence Review

'The Selected Letters succeeds admirably in representing Lawrence's quirky brilliance, his always surprising common sense, and above all else the sheer beauty of his writing.' English Literature in Transition, 1880–1920

Book Description

Having read many biographies of Lawrence, most of which seem sensationalised and distorted, I decided to go back to the sources and make up my own mind. I am so glad I did. These letters are fascinating. You can get rid of all the hype and hear his thoughts and opinions in his own words. You feel you are the recipient and he is writing to you. It also gives new insight into some of his famously autobiographical novels and he emerges as alternately witty, funny, thoughtful and grumpy...much like all of us, I suppose. Really glad I bought this and will now look out for the Cambridge editions of his complete collection of letters which is vast so should keep me going for a while !

This is a book of interest more to a DH Lawrence student or collector than a passing reader. I had to go to the British Library in London to read copies of Lawrence's letters, and it seemed a better idea to have a modest (but comprehensive) published collection of my own. This book is precisely that. Unfortunately it is not in the 'Good' condition described - the spine is a bit tatty and ragged and front cover is stained. So for me it has become merely a working tool, and I read the contents for work rather than also enjoy the books' decorative appearance'; both would have been nice for the price. This sounds critical I know, but that is how it is.

Very good. The volume was as advertised. I am enjoying the "voice" of a highly complicated man.,

Even though I don't mind the old-fashioned type written English, I think I like Charles Dickens, Alexander Dumas more than D.H. Lawrence. I didn't finish reading it.
