Product Description

Product Description

Donegal native and Dublin resident, Kevin Doherty has enjoyed a dual career over the last two decades - both as a solo artist and member of the folk supergroup, Four Men & A Dog. While his work with the latter has tended towards a more exuberant and eclectic blend of trad, folk and Americana, his own work is more typical singer-songwriter fare. Featuring guest appearances from Charley Webb of the Webb Sisters, Lisa O'Neill and the Arco String Quartet, 'Seeing Things' continues Doherty's collaboration with Michael Keeney and follows on from 2010's acclaimed album 'Telegraph'. 'Seeing Things' comprises ten new songs written by Kevin and arranged by Michael. The record deals with what we all have to deal with, namely 'coming to terms' with this world, the daily battle and the constant unfolding. Doherty moves beyond the temporal to a place that allows him a conversation with Jesus and a chat with John Henry, where he transforms himself into a bird in an act of defiance and where he observes Cleopatra's arrival into the eternal city from a window in the Gresham hotel. The album owes a debt to Seamus Heaney and for much more than just a title. Lyrically and melodically he mines a similar seam to the likes of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Randy Newman and Van Morrison, with no shortage of poetic soul-searching, introspection and a little social commentary. In the past, Doherty has worked and recorded with members of The Band, including Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm, in the latter's Woodstock studio.

A superb release from Kevin Doherty which has received great coverage on local radio in N Ireland and well deserved. The CD contains some wonderful tracks. If you are a fan of Leonard Cohen ( Charlie Webb of the Webb sisters guests on the CD), Mick Flannery et al then buy this CD, you will not be disappointed. 5 stars.

This is the fourth solo record from Dublin resident Doherty, also well-known as a member of the folk band Four Men & A Dog. It’s mature singer-songwriter fare of a type rarely heard these days, but more familiar from the late ‘60s / early ‘70s work of artists such as Leonard Cohen and Randy Newman – a string quartet are featured throughout, along with some lovely backing vocals courtesy of Charley Webb (from The Webb Sisters) and Lisa O’Neill.
Doherty’s a fine singer himself, occasionally reminiscent of Nick Cave at his gentlest, and he knows how to put his songs across without ever straining for effect. Many of these are concerned with arrivals, departures or journeys of one sort or another, and listening to them feels something like a journey in itself - in this case, a sweetly melancholy one.
It has to be said that not only does this album sound absolutely gorgeous, but the songs together form a masterly example of elegant, grown-up songcraft which is entirely consistent throughout and does not outstay its welcome. In fact, try as I might, I’m unable to think of a single negative thing to say about this record – it really is that good!
