Review

"Tom Abrahams' writing is sharp like the crack of a rifle, clear like a trumpet's call, never more so than on the pages of his novel "Allegiance", where the stakes are as big as Texas. "
--Graham Brown - New York Times #1 bestselling author of "The Eden Prophecy"

From the Back Cover

""Packed with detail and plot, Abrahams' SEDITION reminded me of some of John Le Carre's work. Maybe RUSSIA HOUSE or TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY.""
--Marc Cameron, International Bestselling Author of National Security
""With echoes of heavyweights like John Grisham, Abrahams rolls out the plot with precision and attention to detail giving us believable characters unlike so many of the other post 9/11 cookie cutter thrillers that clog the genre.""

The President is dead. So the Vice President takes over. But there's a problem - he's dead too. In theory there is a defined line of succession to the throne. But in practice?

A group of what we in Britain call swivel-eyed loons, but which the Americans call Tea Party Activists, think that the best way to enhance the democratic process is to kill everyone in government and start again. Only one woman can stop them, and nobody believes her...

If you put to one side a few hard to believe plot points, it's a very interesting and well-written account of a plot to subvert the democratic system.

I love a good political thriller, one with conspiracies at the heart of government threatening the very foundation upon which the country sits. (As a side note, it's interesting that almost all political conspiracy novels I've read are set in the US - it's almost as if that political system lends itself particularly well to conspiracy. But I digress.)

I don't know the American political system well enough to know if the chain of command as described in this novel is accurate, so I'll assume it is. If the President dies in office, the Vice President steps into the role, unless there's no Vice President, then the job goes to Speaker of the house.

The premise of this novel is that President Foreman dies of an aneurysm in office just before replacement Vice President Blackmon (replacing a Vice President who died in office - unlucky administration, that) is sworn in, but after he's been gone through the vetting process. New VP says it's his job and the swearing in is just a formality and the Speaker of the House, Felicia Jackson, says formality or no, he's still not sworn in, so it's her job.

This is the backdrop for a plan pulled together by a motley crew of conspirators who call themselves "The Daturians". They have someone they want to place in power, someone sympathetic to their cause.

Opposing them is NSA agent Matilda (Matti) Harold. It's her job to find out what they're up to and report back to her unpleasant boss.

Of course it wouldn't be a thriller if the boss didn't believe her, and if she didn't have to strike out on her own, ultimately saving the day. And she does just that. I'll leave it to the reader to find out how (although I'll mention a couple of things later that she does that wouldn't work).

Overall I enjoyed this novel - reminded me of Guy Fawkes who also tried to change a government with violence. The only negative for me was the British knight, he came across slightly `wooden', and some of his dialogue was how foreigners expected a knight of the realm to speak, rather than speaking naturally. That being said, I was still up late turning the pages to see what happened next. The basis of the story is a great idea, and I learned a lot about the system of succession in American politics. For me the story had just the right amount of detail so as not to bore the reader to death - very much in the Vince Flynn mould. Well worth reading.

Reading this book I sometimes wondered if it was a travel guide to Washington with detailed information on sights of interest and places to stay and eat. It was just a bit of a pity that the story was not that strong.

Basically a group of malcontents attempting to alter the course of american politics for obscure reasons being opposed by an amateurish government employee.

A bit implausible but I will have to try the sequel (Intention) to see if there is more to the plot than suggested by this book.

Sedition. A Political Thriller. I wondered a little as a I started this book if it was going to be for me. IT WAS I thoroughly enjoyed it despite my lack of knowledge of America Politics. Every step was clear to me and the Characters were well filled out. If you are looking for a good read then go for this.

Excellent characters, very good plot. A few decent twists and turns to keep things interesting.

At a time when the US may very well be electing it's first female president, it was good to look behind the scenes at some possible machinations in US politics. Also good to read of homegrown e trumpets for a change.

Looking forward to reading the following one.

Nice book. I love a good political thriller and enjoyed this one. A new author to me, but I don't have as much time to read as I hoped to have in my retirement, so this was a good choice.
