The GOOD first:
The thing is tiny. Whilst not silent, it is pretty quiet, at least whilst it's idle. When it gets going the fan can really pick up. It handles all of my content (1080p video) just fine in XBMC running within Windows 8. There is also a hyper-functional BIOS loaded with customisations and control over your system to help match up your power consumption/performance needs. It also looks pretty cool and the looks at home in my media station.
Basically, this machine without a doubt fulfils my needs: it's small, quiet, cheap and just fast enough to handle what I want it to process.
Now for the BAD:
The board inside is horribly laid out. I tried to look around online for some videos and examples but couldn't find any that match this model ahead of time before buying. After purchase, compared to those I did find images/videos of, it seems like similar Sedatech machines have managed better board layouts than this one. The HDD holder sits almost directly above one of the heatsinks (almost touching). The wiring is a nightmare of tangles and bulges I literally had to press the lid down onto in order to get the case closed again. This is not helped by the included SATA cable that, whilst appreciated, is way too long.Read more ›
Good word for the company who dispatched this. Though I bought from Amazon UK, I ordered the PC for an address in France. The company included a french plug socket without being asked. Such an eye for detail is appreciated.
The PC itself is nice, quiet, and very petite. Has plenty enough power for my video streaming. Lots of nice ports for network, HDMI out, extra storage via USB etc. I gave four stars because sometimes the picture colours go a little funny for a minute or so when watching video. Updated drivers but saw same behaviour. Aside from that minor hiccup, very happy with purchase. Opened up a lot of new TV possibilities for us!
First thing I will say is that the unit is beautifully made, very stylish, and smaller than it appears in the picture. It is made of brushed aluminium, just 24cms wide by 21 cms deep, by 8.5 cms high. In my opinion, it's very nice to look at, and sits perfectly next to TV or other multimedia gear.
The unit is passive - no fans, no noise, and I've noticed over two weeks, that any slight (and I mean slight!) heat that builds up is soon dissipated, and the unit becomes cool again. I have it on for hours, and I can say that the passive cooling is working very well.
There is a stylish blue light on the right hand side, which is also the power-on switch, and any HDD activity causes this blue light to slightly flash with an overlaid colour. Inside, there is a supplied Kingston SV300S37A 120GB SSD HDD, which powers up Windows 7 in less than 15 seconds to fully ready. It's an entry level HDD, but perfectly adequate, and benchmarks well on CrystalDiskMark. You get no optical drive, which I prefer, and inside is a single processor - a Intel Celeron J1900 @ 1.99GHz with 4 cores and 4 threads.
I didn't get Windows 7 supplied, but it will run that and any OS you might wish.
There's 4 GB of RAM, an Asrock QT1900-itx mainboard, and Intel HD graphics which obviously you're not going to game on, but runs everything else just fine.Read more ›
I was somewhat surprised to find that the SSD was merely glued to the Blu-ray/DVD-RW optical drive - there being no room for designated enclosure or fixing.
The first issue I had was with the optical drive which scuffed & scratched disks if not inserted with extreme care. This happened because when the tray closed the disk has a tendency to to go over the metal framework - not good.
The next Issue was with the drivers. A driver - I think for PCI would not install.
I also had a problem with bootable recovery disks - both Windows & Linux which would not load properly or give the dreaded BSOD.
Fortunately, Amazon customer services were great & a full refund was given. Thank you Amazon.
