The author has obviously done his background research, especially the cuisine and coinage of 5th century Ravenna, but historical details don’t make up for a daft story. And why do we need to be told that the heroine is having her period? It’s nothing to do with the plot and seems prurient to me.
A missed opportunity to create an interesting murder mystery in a fascinating historical period.
