Product Description

Product Description

Gil Scott-Heron is justifiably recognised as one of the most unique black music artists of all time. His music transgresses all musical barriers in the same way that Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye did. Along with his song writing partner, MD and co-producer Brian Jackson he recorded some of the most memorable songs of the 1970 s, songs which combined a message with powerful rhythms. Secrets, their 1978 album continues the journey started in the Bridges album of 1977 and is another of their best albums. Secrets again features Brian Jackson on synthesiser bass which along with Harvey Mason s drums underpins the deep sound. As with all their albums the lyrics are poignant and informative of society in the 1970 s. Angel Dust warns of the dangers of drug abuse Show Bizness is an hilarious look at the perils of the music business ( they ll take care of everything for only 95% ), whilst Madison Avenue talks of the over commercialisation of western society ( buying is all that s asked of you ). Better Days Ahead and Prayer For Everybody see Gil in a more optimistic light hoping for a better future, which are especially relevant today.

Those black cats GSH and BJ sound a little mournful on this album. Angel Dust is well-known and on compilations, but the other songs are great too and - here's a secret - Better Days Ahead has always been one of my favourite GSH songs. This is how I like the man - messed up and desperate sounding. I don't know why, but I prefer that to the confident raps. In Better Days Ahead, not for one note or word does he sound as if the future is really going to get better. I would also pick out A Prayer for Everybody / To Be Free and Cane.

It's great some of these long out of print LPs / CD's are now available. If you haven't got them would recommend. And soon - if the noises are true - there', be a new GSH album coming out. Peace go with you.

I purchased Secrets by Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson on vinyl in 1978 on its release from HMV in Stratford Broadway, it was a beautiful sunny-day and something special was in the air. After all the passing years the contents of this album have stayed with me, music of this calibre somehow seeps into your subconscious and resides their. Angel Dust, Cane, Three Miles Down and Angola, Louisiana did that also the album-cover image of Samantha the soulfully beautiful cat. Goodbye Gil the world will not see your kind again.

on the way down for the mid-70's heights. it's ok and some good songs, but too much of the same sounding material as before.

Another classic recording by one of the industries finest poets. Gil Scott Heron was rapping and telling it like it is long before hip hop even thought about running its course. This album was a good example of Gil's finest works. A must have!

HASH(0x92df142c) out of 5 stars Solid entry from a classic artist 28 Jan. 2012

I grew up listening to this album, and recently a light bulb went off to search Amazon for it. So glad I did. To me, music sometimes serves the purpose of not just entertaining but also telling the marginal history of the times. The untold stories and feelings of the ignored and uncelebrated. And this is one of the many recordings where Gil Scott-Heron did just that.

Angel Dust, the lead song, is one of those timeless grooves with a deep message. The passion and hurt is something you can't help but feel. It gives voice to the victims of the streets and the ones that they left behind. Other solid efforts as well, especially the sarcastic Madison Avenue. A must have for those that can feel the music moreso than listen to it.

I had this album back in the 80's and loved it, but it was stolen. It is great music with a social message. It was not available on iTunes, so I was happy to see it available on Amazon and ordered a copy ASAP. I love Angel Dust, Cane, and Angola, LA.
