I previously read Sarah's debut, The Language of Spells and loved it, so was thrilled when she released her second novel The Secrets of Ghosts. Although this is a stand alone novel to The Language of Spells, we get to revisit some of the same characters and I was delighted to go back to Pendleford with Gwen and Katie.
Katie plays the main role in The Secrets of Ghosts and I really liked her as a character as I was able to relate to her in some ways, but not her ethereal abilities of course! We still get to revisit Gwen's story but The Secrets of Ghosts is written seven years later, so Katie is older and hoping to discover her place among the famous Harper women. But Katie is having problems and feels like she is never going to discover her power.
I always manage to get really into Sarah's stories and this one was just so easy to get swept along in. Also like before, I really like the magic element in this. It is more prominent in this one than The Language of Spells and I enjoyed it for this. And it also has a more paranormal twist to it, which made for some gripping reading!
I loved the romance element in this. It had a sweetness to it, even if Katie was holding back a little, which we begin to understand the further we read. I liked how it wasn't heavy stuff as I think I have read far too much of that recently so this actually felt refreshing.
Sarah's writing and dialogue also made me chuckle as she makes the characters so different from each other. Even though Katie is quite reserved, she does come out with some funny rude things; completely different from Gwen.
A really nice, light read that you can easily pick up and lose yourself in.
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
I didn't realise this was a follow on from book one The Language of Spells, which I've not read. It was still fairly easy to understand, though if I’d read book one some of the conversations would have stood in better context instead of my having to read between the lines. My bad...Still, it was an enjoyable, escapist read, light hearted romance and a bit of paranormal who dunnit. I didn't guess how things would turn out, that came as a pleasant surprise, I do enjoy books that can impress me plot wise with how things work out. So many are just predictable and though that works mostly, when the endings are different to what I expect it adds to the reading experience.
I liked Katie, she's so determined to be a success within the family and so frustrated at the lack of magic so far, that when the ghosts start turning up she sees benefits and a purpose for her, disregarding potential dangers. That can have a drastic effect on her and the family. Max, he was an enigma much of the while, and there was a very subtle, gentle romance building between him and Katie, which was fun and made for a change from the insta love of so many novels. (though I like those as well, properly done, just its good to have variety) Priced at £3.99 for 279 pages its long enough to let the reader get really into the plot. Its not one of those breath holding, heart stopping, peeping round the pages books but more a gentle meander though an adventure, with a side of romance. Though its connected to book one, its a complete novel in itself. I’d certainly be ready to read more from Katie and the family and friends.
Stars: Three and a half, good gentle story.
