H.S. Clark’s book, ‘Secret Thoughts’ feels like a cross between Michael Crichton’s ‘The Andromeda Strain’ and William Gibson’s ‘Spook Country’—not entirely in plot, but in the sheer way the book propels you into the thick of white-knuckle suspense, yet, surprisingly, it doesn’t sacrifice depth and emotional gravitas.

‘Secret Thoughts’ is an absolute delight to read—the language crackles with the texture of its setting, with the vibrancy of its painstakingly developed characters, wrapped up in a plot that chugs along at full speed right at the get-go. The book starts out with a seemingly accidental series of deaths—people dying from cold medicine—only it turns out those were not accidents. Worse, the fingers of blame point to Dr. Paul Powers—the only person who’s putting everything on the line just to find the real culprit. And that’s only the beginning, as the thick blanket of intrigue close in on Powers, you will not be able to put the book down.

What’s more, author Clark knows his science and technology—he has an uncanny way of dipping his arm in hard science only to heighten the choke-hold on the reader’s imagination, and emerge from it with a flourish. Let me just suffice it to say that I love ‘Secret Thoughts’ to shreds—this is a rare literary treat that you don’t find everyday on Kindle or anywhere else. Those who love the genre will totally dig this. A solid five-star rating for this immensely entertaining book!

The story is marketed as a "Medical Thriller". Well, it is has a strong medical bent but I'd say it was a thriller and rather like Ian Flemings stories where one needs to suspend reality and follow the twists and turns as the intrepid hero continues against all of the odds.

It is a fast paced story that sweeps you through US medical practice, police and law enforcement and finally the federal government agencies and ends up in Columbia to tie up the loose ends. The story is far-fetched in places but if you put aside any issues with practicality (and I could) then it is an interesting read with an intriguing plot and some interesting characters.

I guessed the end ... I will not spoil it by telling you but there is a twist that's left for the next book.
Buy it, I think you may enjoy it.

H.S.Clark has written a complex and gripping story which will leave you wondering who you can trust, afraid to take even an ordinary pain killer if the bottle has come off a supermarket shelf. Then you have to fear so many extraordinary occurrences that the final unmasking of the real villain is almost a relief. Couldn't put it down even though I didn't always understand some of the medical terms. Incredibly readable. Just hope Dr Powers develops into a series.

If you loved and miss Micheal Crichton's books, you are in for a treat. If this is H.S. Clark's first offering then I reckon we are headed in the right direction. Secret thoughts has all the research and minute details needed for this genre PLUS the pace of a good Dan Brown novel. I'll be looking out for the next one. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Code Red Thriller! 5 Aug. 2013

I'm not exactly sure what code red is but I bet H.S.Clark does and I'd wager a bet that he'd know what to do if he heard that. This book was like Code Red was called in the E.R. and everyone ran to action- it was fast, furious, highly suspenseful and full of intense medical goobledegoop that was extremely interesting, even for this right-brained reader. I loved the experience of this book and looked forward to getting to it every night, reading until my Kindle fell on my face and I had to admit it was time to stop reading. Well done, H.S. Clark. This won't be the last I see of you!

Secret Thoughts
By H.S. Clark

Dr. Paul Powers is back with another great mystery for his readers. In this adventure we find Dr. Paul Powers trying to discover who is behind the tainted cold medicine deaths including his good friend Dr. Valdimire Zhazinsky. At least several people had died because of the contaminated cold medicine. H.S. Clark the author presents characters who suffer at the speed of his keyboard. Dr. Paul Powers promises Dr. Z’s wife Natasha that he would find out who was responsible for her husband's death. Paul ends up as one of the prime suspects and is arrested by King County sheriff Jackey McCann. Dr. Paul suffers both mental and physical challenges in this tale of mystery and adventure. He secures the help of Lin Chang, a security expert who helps him trace the data back to a company in Columbia South America. They decide the best way to go forward is to trace the last steps of Dr. Z to find out what happens, you’ll want to read this great adventure “Secret Thoughts” which I give a solid 5 star rating. One of the best books that I’ve read this month. Well written and an exciting read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Medical details and insider scenarios that only a real doctor can know 4 July 2017

I was wondering if I should read Clark's first book after already having read "Immortal Fear", the second book in the Dr. Powers series, and I'm glad I did. While both books are medical thrillers with anesthesiologist Dr. Powers as the main character, they can be read independently without one spoiling the other. Just as "Immortal Fear", "Secret Thoughts" has all the necessary elements of a gripping and captivating thriller, the medical details and insider scenarios that only a real doctor can know and credibly describe, the gripping, well-developed plot and characters with the right mixture of surprising, sometimes "crazy" twists and the logical plausibility that make this thriller a fascinating page-turner. First-class entertainment from the first to the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're looking to read a gripping thriller that you will find hard to put down then this is the book for you. 8 April 2016

I read “Immortal Fear” by Dr. H.S. Clark a couple of months ago and enjoyed that story so much that I was very excited to read “Secret Thoughts”. Now that I have read this book I can tell you that I absolutely enjoyed this compelling medical thriller. Dr. Clark has a remarkable writing style which really pulled me into the storyline thanks to his technical knowledge which gives this book and “Immortal Fear” such an authentic feel. The main character in this book is Dr. Paul Powers and in this story we follow him as he investigates deaths in Seattle related to tainted cold medicine. It isn’t long before this story takes some dramatic twists and turns even taking Dr. Powers to South America as he searches for a killer who always seems to be just out of reach. The author does an exceptional job with character development and through his writing he really brought the characters in this book to life for me. Also, the descriptions of the scenes in this book were so vivid that I could picture all the settings in my mind. I highly recommend “Secret Thoughts”. If you're looking to read a gripping thriller that you will find hard to put down then this is the book for you. I will definitely be reading more Dr. H.S. Clark books in the near future!
