There were so many things that he found relatable, from the friendships to the fact that there was a connection to Cornwall and St Ives, where we recently visited. One thing that I noticed when reading was what a step up this is from some of the books my son has read in the past - even though it's aimed at 9 to 11-year-olds, from the outset the characters are talking about medical terms and science without talking down to the reader at all. For that reason, it was a more involved read and took longer than most books to get through, but my son was really enthused throughout!
The author won the Blue Peter Book Award back in 2011 for the first book in this mystery series called Dead Man's Cove.
This is the fifth book in the series and the young Laura Marlin continues to be a great little detective.
Laura and her friend Tariq live in Cornwall. They both go on a school trip to Australia, leaving all their past troubles behind. Their enemy Edward Ambrose Lucas who was the leader of the Straight A gang was now in prison, so both Laura and Tariq now felt safe.
Whilst on her school holiday Laura keeps in touch with her Uncle, that way she can check on her dog Skye and see what’s going on about the court case involving their enemy.
Laura and Tariq haven’t been in Australia that long when Tariq sees the news on a café TV, to there horror their enemy Edward Ambrose Lucas has escaped from prison. They both know that he’d want revenge on those who sent him to prison.
After their enemy’s escape, Laura gets suspicious of everyone and everything whilst Tariq tells her that she’s over reacting and that’s when their problems start.
That’s all I’m going to say about the story as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who wants to read it.
In total, the book has 208 pages and the recommended reading age is 9 -11 years old.
The author has done a great job with this book; she’s written a compelling and enjoyable story that has characters with a lot of depth.
This book also has some nice black and white illustrations.
I’ve read this book to two different age groups, (9 -10yrs olds and 10 -11 year olds), both age groups loved the story. Some of the children had already read a couple of her books from this series.
If you enjoy reading to your child/children then I’d say this book would be alright for you to read to an 8 year old.
This is a great book series for children who love reading mystery adventure books.
My pupils and I really enjoyed this book so I can highly recommend it. :-)
The story is about a girl called Laura. Her and her school are going on a school trip to Australia. While she's in Australia she hears a story about a supernatural creek so she goes and checks it out, which is what she does because she is a detective. Can she get to the bottom of the mystery?
This is the fifth book in the series and I haven't read any of the others. It would have helped reading the other books, but is not compulsory.
I liked that Laura is the same as me (schoolgirl my age). The bit I didn't like was the beginning. It took a while to get into the mystery which was the when I found the story more interesting.
Happy to recommend.
