A classic of travel writing.

Burton's writing style is not to everyones liking - it can be a little difficult at times.

If you persevere you will get a great insight to the Arab world in the nineteenth century.

The photograph shows the Folio Society edition which is well presented and styled in the nineteenth century practice of illustrated covers.

Quite long but worth the effort

This book concerns Richard burton the 19 century explorers mission to be the first westerner to get to Mecca without being killed( pretty much the same as today come to think of it)only think of Mecca as
Moss side, rusholme, cheetham hill, west bromich, Ratliff, Bradford ,Leeds, wolverhampton,Leicester, hands worth, Middlesbrough, and half of London, in fact I might make my own pilgramage to Mecca it must be empty

HASH(0x8ba461f8) out of 5 stars Valued Edition for Addition to My Library 18 Dec. 2010

At this writing, I don't own an e-reader, though I generally embrace new technology and will probably purchase an iPad or Kindle. That said, I will always love the tactile experience of a handsomely-crafted book. There are small joys in the heft of the book, the glide of the page, as well as the hint of musty pulp. That's exactly what you have in this version of Burton's A SECRET PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA AND MEDINA. Content-wise, this is a curious document of an era in travel that has, thankfully, passed with time. More than anything, Burton reveals the mind-set of his class, of his era and that of his Arabic counterparts.

Interesting story of Burton's travel to middle east, but very long.... One has to be dedicated to get through this one!
