'Le Carré writing at his exceptional best' (Mail on Sunday)

'John le Carré has created a fictive world which he has made almost as familiar as that of Dickens . . . in terms of scope, skill and ideas, it is streets ahead of most contemporary fiction' (Daily Telegraph)

'This consummate and enthralling mosaic is also Smiley's nunc dimittis' (Observer) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

In a quit evening George Smiley meets a class at Sarratt and twelve different stories unfolds about the lives of ordinary people who have chosen, or been dragged into, the world of espionage and how this world affects you, and to what use. “…there's a price to pay, and the price does tend to be oneself”, as Smiley points out. Far from the insipid James Bond and his fantasy world, we are faced with a world of events no one really can mastermind or control. From the lost agent in Berlin to the broken survivor in the jungle camps of Khmer Rouge, or was it only his body that survived? In my opinion, one of le Carre's best books.

Had to read it twice to follow this pilgrim's progress accurately, continuity sometimes tightly stretched. But you get several stories for the money, linked through the perspective of a single operative. Reveals the occasionally good, bad & ugly side of intelligence work, as well as a casual disregard for its source of funding; still fascinating reading.

Patchy series of short stories, but very good. The interrogation in Chapter 11 was just brilliant and the last chapter.

Another fabulous Smiley story leading the reader through a series of short tales of circus adventures and misadventures too. Loved it like I loved the rest of the Smiley oeuvre?
