I had never heard of Celestina Sommer and found her story fascinating. The whole descent into madness was intriguing although I never found myself feeling complete sympathy for her in light of what she did to her daughter. However possibly more intriguing was the authors decision to omit Celestina's maiden name. She was referred to as Celestina _____________ whenever there was mention of her before her marriage and of course her daughters surname was never given as it was the same. Why? It was easy enough to find out what it was - I just went to the same source as the author, the Old Bailey records as noted in the bibliography. This crime took place over 150 years ago so why the secrecy now? That aside, it was a very sad story well told.
