Product Description

About the Author

Trained in fashion design at London’s Ealing Art School, Jan first began working for the House of Worth in Mayfair, London in 1958. She then moved on to wholesale fashion as the designer’s assistant for Slimma. Marriage to an army officer in 1961 took her to Germany for three fascinating years. Later, back in civilian life they moved to Singapore; “another amazing experience”, she says, which has proved valuable ‘grist’ to her writing ‘mill’. After moving to Yorkshire in 1972, she later went through a painful divorce and survived 6 years with two kiddies as a one parent family - a tough period, from which she has drawn in her fiction writing. After managing a fashion boutique in Wakefield, Yorkshire for 2 years, her last position for several years was sales rep for a top designer spectacle frame company, until redundancy finally allowed Jan to pursue her writing ambition. She has a daughter Jayne, son Justin, and two granddaughters Abby and Alexia. Now happily married to Mark for 35 years, they live in a converted barn in rural Yorkshire. In the past Jan has successfully sold various articles and short stories to UK magazines, but longer book length fiction has been her main interest for many years.

I did enjoy this book which is a murder mystery cum love story. My favourite character most definitely was Fran - it was refreshing to read about a successful woman who shopped in Next and pigged out on chocolate.

It is a story that will get you trying to work out who the murderer is, and I must admit I did kind of suss that out fairly early on, so I was glad that for a large part of the book, the murder seemed to take second place in the plot. You will probably shed a tear at the end, but there are also some quite wicked funny little moments in the book.

There were a couple of things I wasnt satisfied about. Would Ellie's demise (thats the only word i will use because I don't want to give the game away) really have happened that quickly, and what about Josh? The book ended with really hardly a mention of him at all, which seemed very strange to me, as his very being was quite central to the storyline.

Its a nice sun lounger read for the summer.

I was first attracted by the title (in fact I bought the wrong book while searching for a paperback)and then by the very attractive cover, having found the author in an Amazon discussion thread. Of course I wanted to know what the secret was ~ and at first it seemed to be the ID of the murderer. Then as the story progressed, I began to suspect each character in turn as the author cleverly planted misleading clues and pleasant diversions. Funny too in the case of the chocolate body paint! Scary in the case of the storm and car accident. The final revelation was not a complete shock as by then the killer had nothing left to lose. Funny, sad, romantic, sexy, intriguing and a great read.

I love a good mystery, especially combined with romance and a gruesome murder. Pacy modern storyline, believable characters and enough twists to keep you glued to your Kindle. I did guess the ending, but only just before I reached it! Will certainly look out for the next one.

This book has it all - romance, murder, mystery, travel, interior decorating, and a healthy woman who eats chocolate! When James returns from a work trip, he discovers his flat-mate has been murdered. Although he has trouble accepting a break-up with his former girlfriend, he and his best friend, Fran, finally become lovers. The story follows their search for the truth in their lives, and how it affects and intertwines with all the other individuals.

Great character development and descriptions - you could easily identify with the people, places, and fabulous meals! Ms. Warburton did a wonderful job of creating an emotional plotline and weaving the personalities and events into a believable story. Well written and edited, she has a talent for plotting a tale and tying it all together into a satisfying ending.

If you like your book well plotted, with believable characters, one that has an exciting start and a satisfying ending, look no further. This book has all that and more. It opens with a murder, which is not solved until the very end of the novel. In the meantime, a love story runs through this mystery, which takes the characters and the reader on a journey from London to Yorkshire, to the New Forest and to Spain. This author is not afraid to tackle some of the gritty issues of life as well as writing with flair about a modern love affair. I look forward to reading her next book.

A great, gripping, exhilarating read that had me entranced from the get-go! I had the kindle edition of 'The Secret' finished within only 3 'sessions' of reading! I found myself guessing 'who-dun-it' very early on, although I soon changed my mind. Then changed it again.....and again! The descriptive writing of everything, from the weather, to meals, to smells was fantastic and something I've missed with recent reads. There was plenty of gripping twists and turns to the story, and I, like many others, hail Fran as the best character.
The ending was a bit of a surprise! I wasn't expecting it!
I'm happy to give 'The Secret' a 5/5 and can't wait to read more of Jans' books.

Although not generally a devotee of essentially female romance novels, I nonetheless found myself quite swept along in Jan Warburton's narrative. This developed nicely after capturing the reader's attention with a sharp punch to the solar plexus involving the graphically-depicted discovery - of all things unromantic - a decomposing corpse in a bathroom at the end of the first chapter! The main protagonists - male and female - are well-drawn and the plot moves along crisply. In particular, the fraught relationships, anxieties and romantic misunderstandings are convincingly described, the familiar English locales that Warburton draws on are aptly chosen and the denouement is genuinely surprising. In short, a most promising first novel that deserves a wide readership among those who enjoy a romance, particularly one that kicks off with something of a shock to the system!
