About the Author

Formerly a professional chef, caterer, and cooking-school teacher, Amy Cotler transitioned in the 1990s to a successful career as a food writer. She has taught at the Institute for Culinary Education in New York City and at The Culinary Institute of America. Her other books include The Locavore Way, Wrap it Up: Bold and Bright Sandwiches with a Twist, One Pot Vegetarian Dishes, and My Little House Cookbook. She was the lead recipe developer and writer for two revised editions of The Joy of Cooking, and she hosted the New York Times online “Food Forum” for six years.

A delight of a cookbook full of lovely English recipes

As a child, one of my favourite books was Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. I found it incredibly magical and reread it again and again. As an adult, one of my passions is cookery books, and I particularly enjoy cookery books that tie in with books, so when I saw this one, I just had to take a look.

The introduction sets the scene by telling us about the food and cookery techniques and practices at the time the book is set, plus about the kitchen garden.

The chapters and some recipe samples are:

Yorkshire breakfasts - recipes include Coddled Eggs and Little Sausage Cakes

A Manor Lunch - including Welsh Rabbit and Yorkshire Pudding

An English Tea - A Proper Pot of Tea, Cucumber Tea Sandwiches and Lemon Curd Tartlets

From the Kitchen Garden - Summer Berry Fool, Golden Poached Pear Molds and Raspberry Vinegar

Dickon's cottage food - Tattie Broth, Pease Pudding and Yorkshire Oatcakes

A taste of India - Mulligatawny Soup, Florence Nightingale's Kedgeree and Fresh Mango Chutney

Garden Picnics - Fire Roasted Potatoes and Eggs, English Crumpets and Jammy Chocolate Balls

Each chapter begins with an introduction to the kinds of foods and cooking techniques used for each particular meal or occasion. The recipes themselves are delightfully nostalgic, many of which I remember from my own childhood, but there are also some I've not heard of but will definitely be trying, such as Warm Cranberry Scones with Orange Glaze.

This is an absolute delight of a cookbook - beautifully and thoughtfully designed, colourful and full of easy to understand and follow recipes, and lots of extra snippets of information and background. It would make an ideal gift, particularly for someone who knows and loves The Secret Garden, is an Anglophile, or like me, English and nostalgic for recipes from the "good old days" that have stood the test of time.

Bags of charm with a good selection of dishes and treats

Inspired by the classic children's book The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This book was first published in 1911, early in the reign of George V, though according to Wikipedia it is set at the turn of the century, so just at the end of the Victorian era. Mary, the truculent heroine, was born in India before being orphaned and taken to her uncle's house in Yorkshire at the age of 10.

The book has bags of charm and it is very well produced. The selection of dishes and treats is good. I was sceptical about the recipes however, given that they are for traditional English or Anglo-Indian items written by an American for an American audience and I was curious about their authenticity. I turned first to parkin. I grew up on this, my mother is from a northern English farming family. The ingredients that distinguish parkin from a ginger cake are black treacle and oatmeal. This recipe calls for molasses (close) and rolled oats (hmm maybe oatmeal is not available in the US). I was bemused by the inclusion of honey. My mother would baulk at adding cinnamon and cloves, but there are other parkin recipes that include them. I tried the recipe...and enjoyed it! It was close...
