We can all tread the beaten path and go to the most visited places. Yet it's the secret bits that enthral the most. Over 150 little known sights are listed here across Great Britain. Did you know that there is a pyramid in Sussex? Discover the hidden secrets in this book. It is beautifully produced with great photos and text. Details include a brief, interesting description, address and contacts, opening times and what's nearby as well as suggesting places to stay. Excellent for all those who like to stay 'been there, seen that'. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.

I'm from the U.S. but visit Britain at least once a year (my wife is British), so I know my way around reasonably well. Yet this book has revealed many sights, both natural and man-made, that I had never heard of before, let alone seen. As such, it is very aptly named. The "gems" are each briefly, but interestingly, described and well represented photographically, thus enticing me to want to check many of them out in my future travels. My only complaint is that in many (but not all) cases, there is no information that allows a reader to located them. An example: Silbury Hill is described (page 42) as being "in the middle of the Wiltshire Plain near Marlborough." That's it. No directions, no road reference, not even a compass direction or actual distance from Marlboroiugh. So I went to Google Maps and entered "Sibury Hill." Not even Google has heard of the place. I looked at the satellite images of the Marlborough area but after about 5 minutes of scrolling around, I still could not find Silbury Hill. I finally located it by doing a lookup in Wikipedia, which listed the geographic coordinates. (For those interested, Silbury Hill is about 6 miles west of the center of Marlborough, on the north side and immediately adjacent to the A4 highway.) Another example is Hick's Almhouses (page 31). We're told they're in Chipping Camden, but no street reference. You could drive all around Chipping Camden for an hour and probably not find them. I finally stared at Google Maps long enough to spot them on Church Street. There are many similar omissions throughout the book.

I'm not sure why such information is not included. Clearly the author or his photographer has been to all the places, hence the photos, so at least one person knows how to locate each. And the space consumed by a brief description of how to find a place would not have increased the size of the volume. Perhaps the author just wants to keep all the gems hidden....
