A good story which misses the feeling of the Napoleonic war. The events and geography appear to be accurate to me but the attitudes of the characters are not in keeping with the era. Sir Sydney Smith caused uproar in the navy for much smaller transgressions of military discipline, the Calvert character is accepted without a blush in the Admiralty of this novel. However read it as a war novel and it will give you an adventure that is exciting and fast moving.

Excellent writing full of action and battle details although the latter part is interesting it leaves me wondering if anyone like our hero would have been in this position. However the battle scenes in Spain were very descriptive colourful.

Should you want to read a story concerning guerilla warfare in the Iberian peninsular, this could be for you. On the other hand, if naval warfare was your choice then give this a miss.

It's one of those books - and then he did this and then he did that. Little characterisation.

Good pot boiler but everything goes too swimmingly well for the hero. Not very convincing shoot to the top of society but a good yarn nonetheless.
