Review

Croft (mainstream romance author Phillipa Ashley) kicks off her Oxford Blues new adult contemporary trilogy with an angsty yet appealing romance. Lauren Cusack, the daughter of a U.S. senator, leaves Washington, D.C., for a year abroad at Oxford, studying for a master's degree in the history of art and visual culture. Alexander Hunt is a compellingly broken English aristocrat. The author is an Oxford alum herself, and she writes with authority about what happens when an upper-crust Brit meets a fearless American. (Publishers Weekly)

A very well deserved five stars, a fabulous emotion filled, dramatic read! (Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews)

A very steamy NA with a sprinkling of Downton-Abbey-esqueold money traditions and snobbery. And I freaking loved it. (Tea Party Princess)

With a great setting, fantastic characters and a passionate love story, The First Time We Met is a great read in the New Adult genre.

(Chloe's Chick Lit Reviews)

I absolutely cannot wait for book 3!

(Erin's Choice)

Pippa Croft captures the overwhelming physical attraction between Lauren and Alexander. It was hot. REALLY hot. (Kate, Books with Bunny Blogspot)

This series has me hooked. I've been waiting for the second book with bated breath! And I certainly wasn't disappointed. This love affair is a real roller coaster of emotions, mine, Lauren's and Alexander's! I knew an 'Alexander' when I was at college and the hot and cold sides of him are something I recognise well. The coming together and moving apart is very much a feature of the book and helps to create tension. The tension is further increased by the behaviour of Emma, Alexander's sister. That byline had me on the edge of my seat!

I like the way Pippa has developed the characters of Lauren and Alexander - particularly Alexander. He has become much deeper and generally more human in this second book. He is British upper class and so will have the "stiff upper lip" but Lauren's warmth is reaching him and affecting him in a very positive way. He is starting to feel the love!

The settings in Oxford and Alexander's home are lovely and divide the book into separate scenes in a very realistic way.
All in all, I loved it and can highly recommend this series.
A real cliff hanger ending leaves me desperate for the third book!

The Second Time I Saw You follows on from The First Time We Met although it can be read as a standalone. Lauren is beginning the new term at Oxford determined to move on from Alexander Hunt. Of course, Pippa throws us a great twist right at the beginning and Lauren’s intentions don’t come out as planned. I loved The First Time We Met and didn’t think it could get much better but I was so pleased it did.

This book is told from Lauren’s POV who gives us the perfect insight into her and Alexander’s steamy and chaotic relationship. Lauren is very likeable and Alexander, who at times felt a bit cold in the first book, is much easier to get into the mind of as he has developed a lot in this book. I liked how even though the story was told from Lauren’s perspective, we could still learn a lot about Alexander and see the more emotional side of him. I also loved the role Alexander’s sister Emma played in this book. Her relationship with Lauren was always set to cause some issues for Lauren and Alexander since teenage girls are never that easy to handle…

The journey in this book was a bit of a rollercoaster ride and I loved all the little twists. The pacing was great, helping me become totally gripped in Lauren and Alexander’s story and then when it ended… I just love how the author builds everything up throughout the whole book and then surpasses herself with an even better ending. Of course I’m now itching to get my hands on the next novel but then that’s a skill in itself… Pippa has written an enthralling plot and some great characters – characters you can almost see in real life and make relations to. The Second Time I Saw You was a wonderful, addictive book and I can’t wait for more.

5/5.

Having read 'The second time I saw you', I'm still not absolutely sure if it's an erotic novel with a good storyline or a good story with lots of steamy sex; either way it will appeal to readers who enjoy both. I particularly enjoyed getting to know Lauren and although it is possible to read this book as a standalone, I really wish I'd read the first book in the series so that I could have followed the story from the beginning.
The backdrop of Oxford University is very well- portrayed as is the aristocratic life of Alexander. There are some excellent minor characters too, notably Professor Rafe. He is so slimy that I wanted Lauren to report him yet he just manages to stay on the right side of sleaziness to avoid this. Alexander's ex-girlfriend, the bitchy Valentina, is another character whom you will love to hate almost as much as Rupert. On the other hand, I liked the way that Alexander wants to take care of his younger sister but is pretty clueless as to how to go about it: this makes him much easier to relate to. There is so much going on in both Alexander and Lauren's life that it's a miracle either of them get any work done!
The book ends on a real cliffhanger which means you'll have to wait for book three to find out what finally happens to them both. As a big softie I'm crossing my fingers for a happy ending.

I was given an ecopy of this book by JB at brookcottagebooks.blogspot.com in exchange for an honest review which I'm more than happy to give. This is the second book in the Oxford Blue Series and I was a little concerned that I hadn't read book 1 first but JB assured me that The Second Time I Saw You could just as easily be read as a stand alone book and I would have to agree. I didn't spend too much time thinking I wonder what happened in book 1?....Until I'd finished it and now I want to read it to understand the characters a little better.

Lauren is determined to stay away from Alexander and start a new term with a clean slate. However this proves impossible - Alexander turns up with a tale of woe and before you know it Lauren is sucked straight back into a relationship.

Their relationship however, is pure chemistry when they come together it's like burning magnesium mixed with water - you can feel the heat and the reaction before it happens. It's a classic case of cannot live together, cannot live apart. Add family & friends with secrets and problems to the mix and poor Lauren is being pulled in every direction.

Pippa has developed characters that evoked quite strong reactions - it's not often I'm reduced to shouting at a book - 'for god's sake' was uttered on more than one occasion as I willed each of them to get a grip. I can't say I loved any of the characters really yet their characteristics I felt were perfect and suited the storyline. Valentina (Alexander's ex-girlfriend) and Prof Rafe were suitably awful, evil and slimy respectively whilst Alexander's 17 year old sister comes across as gullible and vulnerable yet at the same time manipulative and controlling putting poor Lauren in a very difficult position.
