A highly under valued song-writer in his own right, Sam Dees 1975 LP, 'The Show Must Go On' remains unavailable; so step forward the highly reliable Ace / Kent label to proffer this unfaltering near-on 80 minutes of gut-wrenching, tear enducing and emotionally charged resume. The brevity and sparseness of the majority of these piano-led cuts is the clearest giveaway to the fact that what we have here are unfinished demo versions, yet this only serves to add to the whole and in no way prevents the vocal interpretation applied to the superlative self-penned material pushing this up toward being one of the greatest ever deep soul releases -this truly is music from the heart.

Do not expect horns and swooning strings; there is a magic to this release made all the more great by the absense of over-production. The anguish and feeling imparted to the listener is without parallel. 'Number One, Second To None' has to be one of the most simply beautiful celebrations of love for your woman ever released. Yet this sits directly alongside more hurt messages such as 'Home Wreckers' and 'I'm Gonna Give You Just Enough Rope (To Hang Yourself').

This release is absolutely indispensable within the context of the criminally sparse Dees catalogue containing 23-tracks of sheer brilliance. Why oh why are we being denied more?!

I was searching for the classic Sam Dees track 'After All' and chanced upon this album.Mr.Dees is a unique quantity. He is only really known within a die-hard soul fraternity which is a great shame.
His talent as a song writer have (I suspect)made him a reasonable living for many years but his talent as a superb vocalist are not appreciated. This album is a collection of mainly soulful ballad based material which really does showcase what the man is all about.
It is virtually impossible to describe Sam Dees original style but I will attempt to do is an effort to encourage you to buy, buy, buy this album. This southern soul music sits somewhere between the treacly rich soul of seventies groups like the Comtrollers and the Dramatics and the masterful vocals of Al Green. The music on offer is largely simplistic in its delivery but all the better for it as the sheer soul on offer nearly brings tears to my eyes.A few tracks are a bit dated but the majority stand up for the soul genious that is Sam Dees! Highly recommended for music lovers.

Clearly a good song writer, and I do like the relatively sparse arrangements, but I was a little disappointed in this cd. I don't find the delivery achingly soulful, and the sound belongs squarely in the mid seventies, when disco and smooth soul were popular styles. Not bad, simply not great.
