When four patients unexpectedly wake after being declared dead, their families are ecstatic and the word “miracle” begins to be whispered throughout the hospital. But the jubilation is short lived when the patients don’t respond to their names and insist they are different people. It is suggested all four are suffering from fugue states until one of the doctors recognizes a name and verifies that he not only knew the girl but was there when she died in 1992. About the Author

The winner of both a Bram Stoker and World Fantasy Award, P.D. Cacek has published over a hundred short stories and five novels. Cacek holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English/Creative Writing from the University of California at Long Beach and has been a guest lecturer at the Odyssey Writing Camp.

Stunning and compelling

Second Lives is the first book I have read by this author - and I am delighted to see there is a sequel (Second Chances). The story concerns four individuals who die on the same day - August 24 2017. Apart from that fact, they have nothing else in common. But this is only the beginning. Each of them comes back to life - each of their bodies inhabited by someone who has died in tragic circumstances and is as far removed from them in age, circumstance and character as it is possible to get. Each of the rebirths has to come to terms with their new bodies and that is harder than it might first appear. How does a feisty seventeen year old cope with living inside the body of a forty-two year old woman who died from complications during major heart surgery? How does a six year old boy cope inside a man of eighty-one whose body is giving out on him? Then there is the spinster suffragette who died in 1914 and now finds herself inside the body of a young woman who died while heavily pregnant with a little girl who was enabled to be born through the wonders of modern medical science. Is this a horror novel? Yes, but it is one which crosses many genres. The stories of how the families who lost their loved ones on August 14th cope with the new reality, coupled with the stories of those who have been reborn - collectively known as the Travellers - is fascinating, compelling and beautifully crafted by this talented author. I was riveted by this book and found time slipped away unnoticed as I immersed myself in the intriguing unravelling of the various stories. The ending paved the way for the sequel and I look forward to embarking on that journey very soon.

Wow. Just... wow.

Wow. Just … wow.

I haven’t read the first novel. But this one works well as a standalone – though I’m now inspired to get the first!

It’s an engaging premise – that random souls can inject themselves into the recently dead and reanimate the bodies. The old soul has to realise they’re not who they were – every look in the mirror is jarring and the feel of a ‘new’ body takes some getting used to. Not to mention, families of the recently deceased have issues too, seeing their relative alive, but totally different …

And there’s an intolerance angle – a fundamentalist group full of anger and hate, the True Born. True Born despise the Travelers, attacking them at every opportunity. There’s even plans to damage the recently dead so they can’t be inhabited. But that doesn’t mean that True Born souls are blocked from emerging into other bodies …

To be honest, Second Chances worried me in the beginning. It seemed a little slow and, although I was curious, I found I had to push myself. It was only after the first third that I couldn’t put it down. And I couldn’t – I was up til 2am.

No issues at all with the writing – Ms Cacek has a talent, to be sure. Characters are believable and fleshed, neuroses and foibles clear. I would have liked to know more about Dr Ellison and Millie, but I’m guessing that’s all in the first book.

To me, this is urban fantasy with a dash of the supernatural/macabre, and a frustratingly accurate portrayal of fundamentalism. But it leaves you curious – and it leaves you wanting more.

And I do! I want more. I want to know what happens next.

Second Chances by P.D. Cacek is highly recommended. Get in.

An emotional, character driven book exploring reincarnation and a second chance at life.

I didn’t read the blurb before I requested this read, I just saw it was marked as Horror, had a pretty cool and creepy cover and gave it a go. I wouldn’t class it as Horror, but I am glad that I stuck with it.

The idea of 'What happens when you die?' or reincarnation can be quite a frightening topic to think about, it is explored in Second Lives through the idea that old souls have 'travelled' and taken over the lives of souls who have all died on August 24th, 2017, giving them a 'second chance' at life. Although why the number of souls or why this date is never revealed in its significance. So if you're all about the why, this could let you down.

Now, if you don't like to be overwhelmed early on with characters then this probably isn't for you. You are alternated between eight characters and their families as well as varying time periods. You can tell when you're in the past, but I think early on it can be quite hard to really find a connection with any of the characters. Some characters are more likeable than others, and some you may hold grudges against. They can be quite forgetful and having so many makes the first few chapters pretty skimmable in my opinion. I couldn’t be bothered to learn everyone's names. It all ties up nice enough in the end, but getting there can feel a bit like hard work.

It is easily broken up into sections and the writing is really great. Each character has their own voice, you can feel their anguish, pain, suffering and in most parts it feels pretty real. Some stories take a realistic turn, and some are kind of farfetched and might have you questioning wtf is going on.

I did end up enjoying this overall, and I shed a little tear at the end. I would definitely be interested in checking out more books by Cacek.
