Ben gets a much bigger role in this book, in the first he was portrayed as an idiot but in this one he seems more normal and develops some depth as a character.
The other characters are ok, it is a small group so we get to see them all but the only one given any real depth is Doon and he is interesting if crazy.
The plot is good, a robbery with some idealistic overtones and the pace is good, everything moves from event to event with hardly any pauses.
There are a few glimpses of a deeper plot involving the Gods and The Emperor.
There are a couple of flaws though, the Gods behaviour towards the swords is inconsistent and this becomes a key plot point that makes things seem a little weak.
Also there is a rescue that is too convenient in its timing, that is not unusual in this sort of book but it was unnecessary and doesn't add anything to the plot.
Not as good as the first book but still a good, quick and enjoyable read.
