All sailors want to believe their boats can go anywhere and stand up to anything. Who knows when you might get caught by bad weather? It's enough to worry about your own responses without worrying about the safety of your boat. The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat explains feature by feature how you can refit your boat for worry-free bluewater voyaging.

This is the 1st of John Vigor's books I have read, and it won't be the last. What sets him apart from many other excellent authors, is his simple style which gently and logically leads the reader through virtually all you need to give thought to, prior to proceeding offshore.
John explains his subjects with the greatest of care. His explanation of Seasickness (and remedies) is the best I've read. Similarly, the section on how to manage the sails of your yacht in heavy weather, and the effect of each decision is frankly, as comprehensive an explanation as you'll find in a book 3 times the size.
Be prepared to have a pencil to hand when reading this book, because there will be so many phrases and suggestions you'll know you'll want to come back to.
I'm preparing to go offshore, and John's advice deepens one's understanding of what is required (and what is not!) hugely.
Thank you John, for sharing your experience so well!

I enjoyed this book immensely. It contained a lot of common sense and is well worth a read by everyone who sails offshore or is going to sail offshore. The underlying theme is to help you prepare your boat for any event at sea. I particularly liked the "black box" idea!

The title of the book is right. And, even for those who are not planning long offshore travels, this book is a must read. It will help you to judge the technical features of the many yachts you see in the marinas. Lots of remarks and advices in this book on technical issues will also contribute to the safety of your voyage.
For those who plan to buy a sailboat: a must read. Also well printed in a very readable font.

...I was a little disappointed in the Offshore Sailboat. From both title and summary, I was expecting a comprehensive, technical book on preparing a boat for an offshore voyage. In fact, the book is a general, common sense guide to undertaking a long sailing trip. And not a very specific one at that, more suited to those in the "dream" stage rather than those irrevocably committed to a voyage. For sure, it's enjoyable to read, the content is hard to fault and there are a few gems hidden away. But it just doesn't do the title justice.

I have enjoyed reading this book. It is clear and concise. As I am in the process of fitting out my own yacht it has been very helpful in pointing me in the right direction. Much of the information is commonsense. But it is also the type of information that can be overlooked in the rush to get things done. I would therefore recommend it as a good source of basic information for anyone heading offshore.

Some very useful and practical advice. I've read several years worth of Practical Boat Owner, but this book still has some eye openers, it's that kind of publication. I especially liked discussion of the psychology of sailing, from a single-handing perspective, but their is content here that applies to other sailing disciplines too. Some of the advice is already a little dated, mainly due to the recent advances in electronics, but this does not detract from an essential read.

It started mildly and easy to read for the first few chapters, but as the pages progressed I was taken deeper and deeper into the knowledge and experience of a master, it just became more and more gripping. I certainly ended the book a great deal wiser than I thought possible.

The only point I am not too happy about the book is that the author seem to like the idea of using his own currency , which is beer ! . often he says :... it costs about ...that many beer ... As opposed to using dollars or any other currency . This book will remain to be very valuable for any sailor. my advice is get it !
