It has been a while since I read one of Sheila's books, so when I was sent this gorgeous festive themed read, I couldn't help but tuck in straight away. The cover looks beautiful in the image to the left, but it is so much more beautiful in real life, with a sparkly heart on the front, and is certainly a book you'd be proud to be seen reading! The book is actually a sort of short story collection rather than one big novel, which actually suits the book because you can dip in and out of it quite nicely, and I can certainly imagine it will be a great one to read on a cold winter evening in front of the fire! So I dove straight in hoping to love it, and luckily for me, Sheila didn't let me down!

The book begins introducing us to the hotel owners, Neil and Claire, and I thought we would be following them over the christmas period, but that turned out not to be the case. I really liked them as a couple, O'Flanagan writes them as a nice pair that begin the story with a real homely feel because they adore their hotel, and straight away I felt like I wanted the hotel to be okay, just because of them! Instead of following the hoteliers, we are instead treated to a room-by-room story about each of the guests, and the reason they came to be at the hotel at Christmas. This works really well because it allows for interactions between the guests to keep the story in the present but also allows us to go into the back story of these characters which really allows you to get absorbed into their stories.

I don't want to tell you too much about them because the beauty of this book is seeing the stories unravel as you read them, but I will tell you a bit about what's inside.

The Sugar Loaf Lodge is an exclusive boutique hotel in County Wicklow run by couple Neil and Claire. They are struggling to fill their rooms for Christmas. However, the phone calls soon start to come and rooms fill up.

Each chapter of the book tells the story of a different guest and how they ended up staying at The Sugar Loaf Lodge for Christmas. Their different stories will make you laugh, cry as all their lives come together at The Sugar Loaf Lodge and remind us about the true meaning of Christmas.

This was a lovely, different, Christmas read. This was my first book by Shelia O'Flanagan but I will definitely be reading more.

A Season To Remember is a collection of short stories all set around the Sugar Loaf Lodge in which all the characters spend their Christmas. However, although the back drop of this book is set at Christmas, each chapter/story tells of how the specific characters in that story came to be at Sugar Loaf Lodge at Christmas and we also learn of their pasts and back stories, which makes this book suitable to read at any time of year as it's not overly christmassy.

This is a good read and I liked reading and discovering the array of characters that are introduced throughout the book. Some of the stories are quite simple and it is clear from the onset what has happened to the characters in that section to make them visit the lodge for Christmas whilst others are less simple and leave you guessing about the character's story right until the end of their chapter.

This is a great read and would make a great gift for Christmas however, don't be put off by the Christmas theme at any other time of the year.

Story

It's Christmas time at The Sugar Loaf Lodge and there are many guests that have chosen to spend their time away from home. We meet the guests that fill the lodge and learn their secrets and what has brought them there.

Opinion

This book is not Sheila O'Flanagan's usual offerings and is more like a collection of short stories all brought together. This book opens at The Sugar Loaf Lodge and we meet the owners Neil and Claire. They are suffering in the economic crisis and are worried that at the beginning of December they still have many rooms available. Thankfully they appear to have a Guardian Angel and surprisingly all of their rooms are eventually booked.

The Sugar Loaf Lodge has a number of rooms and each room is named after a mountain, and so too is each chapter. Each room and chapter tells us a different story about its occupants and how they ended up at the Lodge for Christmas.

We meet some really interesting characters and it's surprising just how much we learn about each of them and their situation. That's not to say that each person has a happy ending but it definitely gives you an insight.

I have personally found myself wondering what various people are doing and how they came to be at a certain place. Although normally in my situation it is when I am killing time in an airport and trying to work out who is flying where and who is married to who. This is what in one respect drew me to the book. Usually I am not over keen on short stories but this seemed so different.

The book focuses on the place but then integrates everybody's story and take on the situation. The characters were also fantastic and were an eclectic mix of people which kept it interesting.
