A native New Yorker and longtime resident of California, he earned his PhD from U.C.L.A. and served for many years as professor and chair of geography at California State University, Fullerton. Author William Lloyd makes wonderful use of language to describe the links between people and land...perceptions that can change over time as individuals change and as relationships change. In fact, that is the lesson, I believe, from this novel...that how one views his/her intimate relationship with the land (New Mexico, urban Los Angeles, etc.) depends indeed on the human relationships between characters in the novel who are experiencing those landscapes.

Searching for Cibola captures perceptively the thought processes of those of us “of a certain age” who are reflecting on the twists and turns of life…on circumstantial events that have resulted in substantial relationships. To me, this story spoke to how these relationships have defined our lives and, by extension, the lives of others around us. The main characters grew and changed over time…the natural, dialectical evolution of individuals interacting with each other and with happenstance. Beautifully written ...
