Product Description

(2008/Universal) 26 tracks.

Medium 1

Sweets for my sweet
Sugar & spice
Needles & pins
Don't throw your love away
Someday we're gonna love again
Goodbye my love
When you walk in the room
Saturday night out
He's got no love
Till you say you'll be mine
A tear fell
What have they done to the rain
All my sorrows
Four strong winds
Take me for what i'm worth
Too many miles
Have you ever loved somebody
I'll cry tomorrow
Where have all the flowers gone
Some other guy
Ain't gonna kiss ya
Since you broke my heart
I'll be doggone
Stand by me
Money (that's what i want)
Twist & shout

BBC Review

Taking their name from the 1956 John Wayne western, this Liverpool beat group had their heyday between 1963 and 1966 with a string of hits - mostly covers - in the UK and US during the legendary 'British invasion'. This is hardly the first compilation charting their golden years and is very similar to the Union Square Music compilation (2006) of the same name. The most comprehensive is the 2 CD 40th Anniversary Collection (2003), covering their entire career (which limps on to this day inna hit-free retro stylee) but this new set excludes the b-sides featured in its earlier namesake, and includes a few later recordings.

Any fan of 60s pop will have heard their first and biggest hit, Sweets For My Sweet, and may be surprised by how much else is familiar. The group seem to have been unable or unwilling to update their crisply optimistic, teen-beat folk pop sound after that initial run, and the 1979 single, Hearts In Her Eyes, (featured here) must have sounded very dated in the post-punk era. Their version of Twist & Shout adds little to the definitive version by The Beatles, whose influence is apparent in many places.

Buddy Holly would seem another strong inspiration on songs like Sugar And Spice and Don't Throw Your Love Away. But if the chiming electric 12-string guitar of Someday We're Gonna Love Again sounds suspiciously like The Byrds, its release date (1964) suggests The Searchers influenced them. Other celebrity fans include Bruce Springsteen, who made When You Walk In The Room part of his live set for years, and The Ramones, who reprised The Searchers' classic Needles And Pins in a fabulously sneering 1978 take. Other notable tracks include Goodbye My Love, for its oddly wandering melody, and Four Strong Winds, which best showcases their rich vocal harmonies.

The lack of any really distinctive lead singer (a shifting line-up featured three during their peak years) isn't illuminated by the limited sleeve notes, and the narrow lyrical focus on romance may grate for some, likewise their trademark 'squareness'. But The Searchers' main appeal is their period charm, which is considerable. --Jon Lusk

this cd is absolutely great - numerous hits you will love to remember plus a smattering of more obscure ones but all good.
so often it is disappointing to buy a cd of oldies and then to find that the tracks thereon are not the original recordings. not on this cd - all just as they should be. i would encourage anyone who loves the searchers sound to buy this - they will hugely delighted.

The Very Best Of The Searchers is an album every lover of 60s pop music should have. All of their hits and more are here: Sugar And Spice, Sweets For My Sweet, Take Me for What I'm Worth, When You Walk In The Room, Have You Ever Loved Somebody, What Have They Done To The Rain, and many more. Their distnctive twangy guitar sound makes them stand out from other groups. They went through many personnel changes during the 60s, and this album reflects their best music.

This was actually bought for a neighbour, who like me remembers the 60's. She wanted to hear 'when you walk into the room' and found it is rarely played on the local radio, so I was asked if a Searchers album was still available. A few minutes in the Amazon store and yes it was.
My one disappointment was 'Bumble Bee was not included in the play list yet was a hit for the group.

Good disc, which has the important hits. Only a few corney ones. Reveals the semi C+W style of Mike Pender trying to over-reach himself, but Tony Jackson fortunately stayed with them long enough to sing on all their important [early] stuff. [Unfortunately, he wasn't good enough to survive on his own [singing rock] - well, with his group The Vibrations. The production of the CD is good, and altho I've got just about all the stuff of theirs that I want [on vinyl & CD], this compilation nevertheless has some of the E.P. - originated stuff on here also. Pity the photo used on the CD shows the group without Tony Jackson, but with his replacement on bass, Frank Allen. Frank is miles ahead of Tony [GRHS] on the bass: he was the bassist in Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers whom he left in 1964 to replace Tony Jackson towards the 'Needles & Pins' times. People forget that with all these politics going on, it was John McNally who started the group, and keeps it going [with Frank]; other members coming and going [only very infrequently thank goodness].

This review is from: The Searchers: The Very Best Of (Audio CD)
The 'Searchers' emerged during the 'merseybeat ' revolution during the early 60's
the surge of interest for the music from that part of the U.K led of course by the
'Fab-Four'
The 'Searchers' were formed in 1959 by 'John McNally' and 'Mike Pender' they
took the name of the group from 'John Wayne's' movie 'The Searchers'
They broke into the U.K Charts in 63' with the pop-classic - 'Sweets For My Sweet'
which topped the singles chart for 2 weeks.
The group did have a further two number one's in 64' again, pop-classics' -'Needles
and Pins' and 'Don't Throw your Love Away'
Between 63' to 66' they achieved (other than their three number ones already listed)
a further seven Top 20 entries three of which peaked in the U.K Top 10 , the three
being 'Sugar and Spice' (Chart '2' 1963) 'When you Walk in The Room' (Chart '3'
1964) and 'Goodbye My Love' (Chart '4' 1965)
The group did also have three or four lower order entries during the 63' -66' period of
time.
Some of the numbers not listed also worthy of a mention 'Someday we're Gonna Love
Again' 'Love Potion Number No 9' (A cover of a 'Clovers' hit) 'What Have They Done
To the Rain' 'Twist and Shout' ( a rock/pop classic ) 'Sea of Heartbreak' ( a 'Don
Gibson' classic) and their version of the classic 'Rock' number 'Money' (that's what I
want)
Back in the early sixties I was fortunate, at the height of their popularity, to have seen
them live on-stage on a multi-artist pop presentation.
'The Searchers' were one of the quality groups of the day, this album representing many
of their best loved songs.

The Searchers had many hits, but many have not feathered the test of time. 9 of the tracks on this collection are my faves, the others are also rans in my book. I bought this CD after checking out their latest 4-CD release. Luckily one can listen to snippets of each track and that collection was very poor indeed, so got this. In spite of my comments, I am happy with the purchase and would recommend it.

This has all the great tracks on it and took me right back to my teenage years. Anyone who wants a trip down memory lane will love it.

I am a big fan of music from the 1960's era and this band is one era's most seminal during that period. sweet for my sweet is one of my favourite, and needles and pins. another great tune is also sugar and spice, I love their version of Pete Seeger's where the have all the flowers gone. Four strong winds is beautiful. This is a fine compilation.
