A well informed and authoritative account of the tragic story of the Panchen Lama I have read. Isabel Hilton renowned journalist and a broadcaster manages to capture the intricate story behind the rivalry between the Chinese Communist government and the exiled Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama to appoint one of the most senior Buddhist lamas.
The book must be read by anyone interested in the current situation in Tibet.

I'm on my gap year and am going on to uni to study oriental history. I only knew the basics on Tibet and wanted to find out more. Isabel Hilton's book was recommended to me by a friend and I just want to pass on the recommendation.
Though the book is a little difficult at the beginning, it is well worth ploughing through. The beginning is all the necessary background and history to the thriller that unfolds. It is eloquently and cleverly written and I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. The truth of the story has also inspired me to go and find out more...

This is the most authoritive account I've seen of the situation of the young Panchen Lama, missing in Tibet for many years now. Isabel Hilton has done an amazing job of researching an issue that in itself is difficult to find information about and to understand, and is made more difficult by the Chinese government deliberately obscuring information and facts.

Format: Paperback
A truly gripping story about the discovery of the Panchen Lama, the second most important figure in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy, this book is essential reading for anyone remotely interested the magical processes of Buddhism and the harsh real-politik of the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
Hilton unravells the story of the Panchen Lama's place in Tibetan history, and his role in resisting the Chinese occupation in a superb mixture of reportage and scholarship. What is particularly interesting is the way that she crosses the line between being an objective reporter and a participant in the drama when the Dalai Lama asks for her help in identifying the new incarnation...

Format: Paperback
This book details an extraordinary battle of wills between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama's government-in-exile. The battle, concerning the selection of the reincarnate of the 10th Panchen Lama, has had a profound effect on the Tibetan world--and will for some time to come. Read this book to find out why. Isabel Hilton presents the compelling inside story as it dramatically unfolds: she deftly juggles the complex research involved, and scoops some surprising interviews. The book builds up to the tragic disappearance of the young 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima--Tibet's stolen child.

Isabel Hilton's meticulously researched account of the debacle that arose in the search for the reincarnation of the 11th Panchen Lama gives a powerful insight into the workings of the Communist Chinese mind in its attempt to stifle all opposition to its programme of "unity and reform". We have here an authoritative, and imaginatively written, account of the Tibetan tragedy since the Chinese occupation of the 1950s that leads no doubt in the reader's mind of the human wrongs that have been committed in the war of nerves between Beijing and Dharamsala. Isabel Hilton writes dispassionately and self-effacingly, with quiet emotion and great mastery of her material. This book is to be highly recommended to those who wish to gain an overview into the fascinating and tragic history of Tibet and its spiritual leaders under the domination of a brutal regime.

This is one of the most important books that I've ever read. It will certainly change my life in that, having read it, I'm unable to put the book down without doing something...If you don't know much Tibetan history you'll have to concentrate in the first half of the book as Isabel Hilton is a scholar of repute and is determined to inform the reader fully of the background to the events that unfold. It's well worth concentrating as the second half becomes a 'cancel all other plans and sit and read' thriller. Her wry humour often made me laugh out loud. Isabel Hilton speaks fluent Chinese and so has managed to interview a fantastic range of characters. She also includes her several meetings with The Dalai Lama and of the cameo role that she played in the tragedy that was to be the ending of the story as it is told here...

Format: Paperback
This is a true life account of the search for the panchen lama that reads like a novel. It is full of twists and intrigue and is immensely easy to read. This explains the heritage of the panchen lama exceptionally well, as well as currents events surrounding his discovery and capture by the Chinese. A fascinating read about an important Lama to all Tibetans.
