Years ago I started off in the first instance with the ‘plier’ type rivnut insertion tools and up to a point, they work but you do need to apply a lot of pressure on them in some cases – the larger the rivnut, the more pressure required and so on - to get the rivnut to actually ‘squash’ up as required. As time passes on, my eye caught this Sealy tool that looked the business as you can exert decent pressure by closing the levers together as opposed to having a strong hand, not far off a Russian weightlifters perhaps?, as in the above plier type which after doing a few all at once, takes it’s toll on your hand believe me – tee shirt on order.. I looked at this product both on-line in the comments and reviews plus a video showing it in use etc and finally I ordered one. The tool came rather quickly and to be honest, it oozes a bit of ‘class’ as you get them out the box: at this point collectors of tools who don’t really use them but like to bore folk with the fact they own such things will be disappointed as you don’t get a natty display or any other form of box to show or keep it in as it is a working tool but by cracky, does it work!. To put a rivnut on the end and stick in the hole required and a closing of the levers and its done in a second is wonderful – one action and its then a case of unwinding the large nut or knob on the back of the tool to undo the threaded part of the tool and job done. I would suggest anybody who does a lot of work requiring such a tool and suffers from, say, arthritis or similar this is for you. There is a long arm model similar to this one for another two larger size rivnuts upwards but I felt this was both adequate for my needs and cost effective plus being a Sealy brand, you get instructions on how to use it plus – importantly! – an exploded view or breakdown sheet of the spare parts and part numbers should you require any. Overall I am very impressed with this tool and feel it could well outlive me judging by its robustness and why I never came across it years ago is a mystery. 10/10

Nice and easy to use to set a rivnut in place, comes with a variety of threads:

M3 x 0.5
M4 x 0.7
M5 x 0.8
M6 x 1.0
M8 x 1.25

Changing the mandrel is a bit of a faff but once you get used to it, it can be done quickly without a tool.

This isn't really suited to a tight space, you need at least 12" of room in front of the rivnut to get it in, but if you have the room, a couple of pushes of the handles and the rivnut is set nice and solid.

This works well on zinc and on stainless rivnuts. Alloy ones should be even easier.

Quality low cost tool

There is a lot of rubbish out there that look like cheap pot riveters that are not up to job of rivinuts, this isn't one of them, I have only used it on aluminium rivets which it copes with easily. 3,4,5,6 & 8mm. So can't say how it would cope with steel rivets, but it feels quite solid and is easy to use once you get the hang of it. Get the hole size right a 4mm nut is a 6mm hole, 5 is 7mm, 6 is 9mm, 8 is 11mm (I don't use 3mm!) and it gives a very tidy blind fixing with a threaded insert. The knack is to get the rivet crushed tight so that it doesn't spin without overloading the tool, the instructions say to adjust the locking ring to give a max range of 6mm (you measure this) the more expensive long handled version has a gauge showing this. In practise you get the feel of whats tight, after all if you get it wrong and the rivet spins just go back and squish a bit more.

After watching YouTube at the various diy ways of installing riv nuts thought it looked easy and would give it a go. No matter what I tried though could not get them to work so reluctantly decided I would have to buy a tool.

This was a used item from amazon at a good price and arrived next day.

The tool is simplicity itself screw rivnut on insert in hole close arms unscrew done. Have never bought a tool before that has made a process so simple and quick if you need to insert a load of rivnuts this is the tool.

This is a good tool especially for the price, it can be a little fiddly to set up but does a good job when it is set up.

The hands aren't the most comfortable I would still buy it again.

Nice little touch it comes with little storage boxes for the different setting tools.

Needed a rivnut setter to fit a custom trim panel modified to take the table in my VW T5 campervan. So glad I went for this dual lever version rather than the pliers as it has plenty of power to set the rivnut but, more important, much easier to apply just sufficient leverage to set small 4mm aluminium rivnuts without stripping out the thread. Well worth the additional cost over the pliers version.

This seems reasonably well made, works fine, and covers a good range of rivnut sizes, including in stainless steel. However the arms need to be opened so wide that I was not able to get access to a single one of the places where I wanted to use a rivnut.

Sent it back and bought the S&R tool instead, which is very well made, neat to use and gives better access, though it can't do the larger rivnuts that this Sealey tool can be used with.

Used them of steel rivnuts. With M3 I had to pack the nose with a washer to get the correct thread exposure to mate enough with the brand of rivnut I used but M4 and larger seem to work fine as delivered. Unlike some cheaper items they seem to cope with steel rivnuts fine.
