Lydia is no angel, but she doesn't claim to be. She indulged too, and she enjoyed the extravagant rock and roll lifestyle just as much as anyone in the Kiss circle.
What makes the book special are the personal photos, documents, and scrapbook-type items that Lydia weaves into her story. It's as much a visual book as it is something to read. There are great photos of Peter before he was famous, pictures of Kiss in the very early days, and shots of them on tour and traveling the world. I doubt most of these photos have ever been seen before. Lydia also has an excellent memory for detail. Yes, she lived it too, but it's pretty obvious that a person who would save ticket stubs, matchbook covers and other little items would probably be able to recollect lots of things.
It's a big, heavy book filled with color and interesting tales. Lydia doesn't paint herself as a victim, but she does describe the fallout from her divorce with Peter. She ended up with tax bills (and others), and he seemed perfectly willing to cut her loose for a Playboy model, even after all Lydia's years of looking after and supporting him. Very sad.
I absolutely love this book. The only minor complaint I have (very minor) is that there are some misspellings here and there, but not enough to detract from the overall book. Good for Lydia that she has finally told her story and shared some pretty awesome experiences. She's done a great job.
what i took from this book was for one, Peter was pretty much a douche bag and did more drugs than i realized..and Lydia has had some major tough breaks in life. i think it's safe to say she has been living a full life and has had many great experiences and stories to tell, which she unselfishly displays here, but i also at times felt bad for her and the pains she has endured throughout her life from the loss of family, to financial distress to dealing with Peter's erratic behavior and ultimately, his infidelities.
if you're a KISS fan of course i recommend this book. as i said it's a great read, but just be aware that it focuses on Lydia the most, than Peter, than everyone else. i'd say it's a great overall rock n roll book, and not just a KISS book. it most certainly is not comparable to KISSTORY because that book was ALL KISS, although i think that book could have been done much better than what was produced.
so in conclusion, i would definitely recommend this book not only to KISS fans, but to rock n roll fans or anyone who has a curiosity of a behind the scenes look at someone who for a while, was as close as you can get to being with the hottest band in the world....KISS
