About the Author

Pepper Pace stories span the gamut from humorous to heartfelt, however the common theme is crossing boundaries. Pepper’s unique stories deal with taboo topics such as mental illness and homelessness. Readers find themselves questioning their own sense of right and wrong, attraction and desire. In addition to writing, the author is also an artist, an introverted recluse, a self proclaimed empath and a foodie.

This was my first book that I had read from the author Pepper Pace, and it was refreshing to read a romance story, which had a serious topic underpinning the plot. I previously knew very little about the gruesome genocide travesty, to which transpired in Rwanda in the early 1990's, and the author thoughtfully highlighted aspects of this, and albeit fairly unpleasant to read at times, I felt the darkness of tragedy against the light of the romance was interwoven successfully.

The two main characters, Tim Singleton and Martier Nufaika Besigye were written well enough, and the pace of the story was structured effectively. In the author's Acknowledgements, she says the book is about 'a man and woman’s journey to self'. I felt the story focused more on Martier's journey of finding her 'self' more than Tim, which somewhat, hindered the ability for me to fully capture the essence of Tim's character. With that said, I really enjoyed Tim's sense of humour - unfortunately, this wasn't shown with enough consistency for me, however, when it was present, it did make me chuckle out loud!

Oddly enough, I couldn't completely invest my belief in Tim being the love interest for Martier. As much as I loved that they were an interracial couple with an age gap of several years between them, I felt that their wasn't enough dynamism between them both to make their chemistry sizzle and mesmerising.

A Seal Upon Your Heart was an interesting read: genocide, religion, sex, death and love were topics that were all included in it's tale, which help to encapsulate a full rounded story.

Once again, Pepper delivers another thought provoking read. She has truly been given a gift of the written word. She is able to capture from the first page. Personally I have to be careful when I start reading her books, because I can't put them down, once begun. This story covers the war in Rwanda, the relative peace of the United States, then back to the Rwanda. This is a very tragic topic, and not for the faint hearted in some places, but it tells of real life happenings, and covers a time of heart break, horror, and terror. It tells of mans inhumanity to man. The stark realism is mind blowing, in sharp and unfettered writing. I loved it, and will certainly read, and read again as I have with many of Pepper's books. I enjoyed the books I have read by this Author, because unlike others, her male characters as in Crash, They Say Love Is Blind, Beast, Stranded, and Juicy, are not always, tall, dark, handsome, know it alls with no problems. They are human with problems, making mistakes, and just trying to make the best of what God has given them.

I love Pepper Pace but I did not enjoy this book. It did not flow like the other books. I'm not convinced about the love story between the characters. I don't mind older men, but he's more than twice her age. I think 15 years difference is about ideal. I kept waiting to see more spectacular things about this man but could not see it. She was just so young at 23. If she'd been 30 years old, it would have been perfect. She hasn't lived life at all and I'm quite uncomfortable that she fell for the 1st man. I'm just not convinced that this would last a life time. If in real life "forever" is hard to come by, I prefer the characters from a romance novel to at least have a chance.
I still love you Pepper, this is just my own take on things :)

I really enjoyed this story about Jane and Tim. I did not like it when she left him for a while but she had to find herself. Another lovely story from a great author. I highly recommend it, worth the time to read it.
