It works fine as a drag and drop store for files, BUT critically for me, I have not managed to get the on board software to work. Let me stress that this isn't essential and you can still use it as a drag and drop drive, but I was specifically looking for the benefits of the on board software to allow computer back up and to explore some of the social media back up options.
The software is there but when I try to install it, it says "unable to locate probably due to download interruption". And yet no download is involved. I'm running Win 7 and also turned off AV software before attempting this. So, onto the Seagate web site. There are several other posts with the same problem, several of them three or more months old, with no response from the Seagate moderators. There is an option to download the software though, so I tried that with exactly the same result. So the main reason I wanted this drive is completely ineffective. Clearly for some, the software works fine, so it must be something with my set up, although I have never had an issue with drive software installations prior to this. What irks most is the lack of response from Seagate to what is clearly an issue for more than a few. All the troubleshooting assumes you have loaded the software - no mention of when it fails to install at all.Read more ›
The brushed metal effect looks very nice, but it's only on the front. The sides are glossy plastic and the back is matte plastic. The joint where the sides meets the back has a slightly sharp edge. It's not sharp enough to cut your finger or anything, but it stops it from being a pleasant object to hold and makes it feel a bit cheap. There aren't any rubber feet on the bottom to stop the drive sliding around, but the back is matte plastic, so it's not super-slidey.
The drive has a thin white light on the front which lights up when the drive is connected and goes out when it's ejected for disconnection, and the light pulses slowly when files on the drive are being accessed.
The computer I'm using the drive with (a mid-2011 iMac) only has USB 2.0, but for what it's worth when testing with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test app I get around 23.1 MB/s both for write and read speed (attached using the supplied cable directly to the iMac with no hub in between), but again that's using USB 2.0, so I can't comment on whether it would be faster when connected by USB 3.0.
All in all, I'm fairly pleased with the product. At the moment it's priced at a premium over other 500GB drives, and I'd say the slimness and the design are just about worth it. The only issue really is that slightly sharp edge which mars the premium feel a bit.
It has MORE than enough storage for ALL of My family movies and pictures.
(I have over 128gb's of family movies, pictures, and other media)
These slim drives can come in two storage sizes that I know of.
500gb and 1TB sizes, depending on your needs and preferences.
It is very quiet/silent whilst in use, with no clicking or whirring sounds.
The read and write speeds are very fast and efficient, which comes down to it's fast USB 3.0 connector cable, which is supplied in the box, with the hard drive and instruction manual/s.
It is backwards-compatible with older computers and Mac's with USB 2.0 ports.
This hard drive comes with pre-loaded software, to enable you to back up files on your PC, via Seagate's own 'dashboard' software.
I didn't have to use this, as I've always been one to simply 'drag and drop' or 'highlight and move' files to the hard drive itself.
The product is well packaged, so it doesn't suffer any bumps, knocks or shocks.
It's well-built, solid, and has a brushed, smooth metal surface, with a smooth, plastic underside in black.
There are no sharp edges or screw holes that I have seen.
This is a super-portable drive, that fits snuggly and comfortably into a breast pocket, jacket pocket, or trouser pocket, without causing discomfort.
The hard drive that I bought, came with 2 years manufacturer's warranty, which I am very pleased about.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this to you all.
You won't be disappointed.
Thanks for reading!
Then, about half way through a Masters degree course in 2004, my Mac went into a permanent sleep and I lost all my data.
That included movies, animations and sound files, all created by me, so there was no possibility of simply downloading them again and - as I had never done a proper back-up - I was royally stuffed.
After many, many hours of unnecessary extra work I was back where I had been months before, and the first thing I did them was buy two back up drives and make sure I copied everything from that point on, twice.
I relate this short tale simply to point up how essential I think that back-ups are. I have, over the years, become something of an expert on back-up discs - and was really pleased to have the opportunity to review this diminutive Seagate drive.
It really is tiny and slim, and - as you can see from the photograph I have uploaded - it is not much bigger than an iPhone 3.
It is pretty much a 'plug-n-play' device, and you can either use it as a Mac and PC or as a Mac only drive.
I tried it as a Mac/PC drive first and it worked fine on a range of laptops (Sony Vaio, Toshiba Satellite) and then I wiped it and hooked it up to the 'Time Machine' facility on my MacBook Pro.
It took about 6 hours to back up around 300 GB of data in Time Machine mode, but my Mac only has USB 2, so USB 3 should be faster. Depending on which review you read, USB 3 should be anything from 3 to 10 times quicker.
It is also small and innocuous enough to slip into a bookcase or somewhere else - well away from your computer - so that it can be used to reclaim data in the unlikely event that your computer is lost or stolen at some point.Read more ›

Very high quality. I have owned other portable hard disk drives in the past but this looks like a different class. I still does very much the same job but it looks very cool.Published 11 months ago by Mr Harwood
