I have used it with FireWire 800 and have found it very satisfactory. There are two FireWire ports so it can be daisychained.
Unfortunately, it does require its own power source and must be connected to the electricity.
It comes preformatted for Mac.
In the box, you get a 5 foot FireWire 800 cable and a 5 foot USB 2 cable. (It makes it a refreshing change to have cables of ample length included in the box. Thank you, Seagate)
After a couple of weeks of use, I started getting "read only" error messages for the drive. Then my Seagate GoFlex For MAC stopped working as a Time Machine. No reason. No warning. It suddenly gave a "back up not completed" warning with the disc shown as "not mounted". I ran a Disc Verify and it was shown to be OK. I was able to recover the drive with "repair disc" on disc utility.
The drive "unmounted" a few more times during the next year, but I was always able to reconnect by running "repair disk" on Mac's Disk Utility. I was never sure whether it was problem with the Seagate external drive, or related to Mac OS upgrades. None of my other three external drives were affected, so that suggests it was a Seagate fault.
Two weeks ago my Seagate 3Tb stopped working again, and trying to repair it with Disk Utility failed. I can not erase the disk and reformat to start using it again, and jot will not connect to another computer. I contacted Seagate and received a quick response, but none of the measures they suggested worked. It seems that the Seagate drive has simply failed. This is disappointing and very poor value for money as the disc was only 14 months old. I have much older external drives (including a Seagate desktop and Seagate portable) continuing to work reliably with no mounting failures.
On unpacking the unit I was immediately impressed with the build quality of the housing. Very sturdy, it comes with a rubbery feel which helps prevent finger marks on the casing, unlike the current crop of 'piano gloss' housings. This is set of with smart silver trim along the top and front. As the unit is designed to stand vertically the overall effect is akin to a hard-backed book.
At the rear of the base are sockets for power and firewire, while at the side is a further firewire socket along with a mini-USB socket. It should be noted that the firewire sockets are the new '800' series so if your equipment sports the older IEEE394 interface you will need and adaptor cable. The front of the unit shows a small white LED indicating connection to the host and this pulses when data is being transferred. There are a further three indicators which light up progressively as the unit fills with data. A 'fuel gauge' type of feature.
Also in the box is a power supply with adaptor plates for continental 2 pin or UK 3 pin wall outlets, a USB 2.0 cable and a '800' type firewire cable.
As with all these devices it really is a simple case of plug and go. The drive was recognised without problems and in use I obtained transfer speeds of around 14 Mb/s with a USB connection. I couldn't try the unit over firewire as I am waiting for an adaptor cable as I mentioned earlier.Read more ›
Negative: The hard drive stopped working without any notice after less than 3 months since the installation !
I have tried contacting the seller who directed me to Seagate.. where their returns website is a minefield clearly designed to put you off returning anything!
I have now contacted Amazon in the hope that something will be done about this useless piece of junk.. Don't buy it
First impressions are good. Judging on appearances alone, it's a nice looking slab. Its outer casing is minimal with a metallic looking plastic centre area which has vent holes on the top side. The black sides have a matt/silk finish which is nice aesthetically if nothing else.
It looks and feels solid and attaches to the base with a reassuringly solid 'clunk' which doesn't feel loose or unstable in any way. The base unit has ports on the rear and left side, those being a Firewire 800 and power on the rear and another Firewire 800 and mini-USB on the side. There's also some vents on the rear and that's about it aside from the SATA connection between the base and the drive itself. It came with all necessary cables (Firewire 800 and USB, both 1.5m long) and the Firewire 800 cable fits solidly into the back of my iMac without any excess looseness or wiggle.
I've included a photo of the box contents on the product page to show what came in the pack and to illustrate the extra ports on the side of the base which allow the Firewire to be daisy chained. I have an older Firewire 400 Drive hooked up to it with a FW800 to 400 cable and the pass-through operates fine even if this drive is unpowered.
I've not really measured the performance of the drive but it's been working fine as far as I can tell as a Time Machine drive for my Mac (for which it came preformatted, plug and play). I can only hope it will be reliable in the long term - time will tell.

Useless, kept creating data errors and I had to reformat many times. Couldn't rely on it. I probably just had a bad drive but would not trust again!Published on 7 July 2014 by MR I.
