SmartEvent Errors

Warning! Make sure you check these drives for SmartEvent errors. Im on my third attempt. Drive will look and feel fine but scan the darn thing once it's hooked up.
My RAID contrallor picks up on it straight away, however my other PC only finds the smartevent error after a full scan.

SmartEvent means drive is likely to fail in the near future.

Drive is getting 1 Star, which is a shame because I got other Seagate drives that are 6 years old and still going.

I think the main issue is the packaging used to deliver the product does not provide adequate protection in tranisit.

Seagate Barracuda 7200 Desktop 1 TB Hard Drive

The seagate drive was bought as a replacement for failing Hitachi 3.5" hard drive in a Hewlet Packard desktop ccomputer.
I also purchased a Rshtech cady to enable the clone.
On plugging the seagate into the caddy and powering it up, the seagate did not spin.

To find out wether the caddy or the seagate was at fault.
I removed the Hitachi drive from my computer and tried that in the caddy.
It spun up as expected and on conection to a laptop all its files could be seen.

So the supplied seagate drive was not working and is faulty.

I am returning it for a refund.

I was surprised by this as I have always bought seagate, I have 3 - 1tb external Seagate drives and they have worked perfectly for many many years.

It felt good to have 4tb of data storage on my system... Shift all those files and media filling up my c drive to a large reliable Seagate disk. Somewhere to backup my photos and music.... Very happy. But - with less than two years on the clock the dammed thing has given up the ghost - mechanical failure. The computer had been behaving weird for a while... Never thought it was my storage drive...a Seagate as well. I have other drives 6 years or more old still working fine... Samsung, Toshiba and others so very disappointed and hacked off at the loss of data. No more Seagate for me.

Another Failure!

Having already had a 6Tb Barracuda fail straight away, I was staggered when another new Seagate drive failed.

This one (8TB Barracuda Pro) also failed with more or less its first proper use. Having initialised the drive with a GPT partition table and created a partition, I tried to install some software into it. The drive was recognised, and I was able to create the target folder for the installation, but the actual process stalled before completion. I eventually aborted the installation and tested the drive with Seagate's SeaTools software - it failed both the tests I tried! I didn't remove the drive at this point, but restarted Windows 10. It took an age to shutdown, and when the machine rebooted there was a warning from the BIOS that the disk was likely to fail imminently.

I removed it from the machine and put it in an enclosure so that I could run tests on it from another machine (using Linux smartmontools), and they simply confirmed what I'd already learned.

My new computer build had Windows 10 running extremely badly, to the extent I was resigned to doing a reinstallation, but I now know that the problems were all due to hard drive failures (Windows was actually installed on a M.2 drive, which had no issues). Having swapped out my shiny new Seagate drives for some old hard drives I was no longer using, everything runs like a dream (I just have older hardware and less storage).

Needless to say, this drive is scheduled for return and a refund. I'll use the money to buy a replacement, but I don't think it will be one made by Seagate.

Seagate reliability isn't what it should be

I bought a trio of these in late May 2017. It's now August and one has already hiccupped twice, the second time being terminal. Because these were in a RAID5 array, no data has been lost - but two failures in three months doesn't bode well for drive longevity beyond the warranty period. In fairness to Seagate, their return procedure is rapid, but it worries me that Seagate are the only brand of drive I've EVER had to return due to in-warranty failures.

It stores ALL of my games on Steam! Loading times are negligibly slower than an SSD, to the point where it's pretty much useless storing your games on an SSD which is more expensive per GB.

Of course it's a hard drive and it has its limitations.

If you intent to use this with tasks that require frequent read/writes of small data it can be very slow. I would recommend a hard drive for its cheap price per GB and large capacity. I recommend using it as a secondary drive, to accompany a faster medium that holds Windows and other small software. But... 3TB for this price is great and it's reliable.

The drives themselves seem ok but they were very poorly packaged.

Bought a load for me and friends and they were literally all chucked in a box with minimal bubble wrap.

Will be keeping an eye on them me thinks. Other than that, no issues and great price.

Hence only 4 stars.

They do what they're supposed to, but only for so long.
I've had three Seagate HDD's now and all three have failed way before other makes fail.
This is staggering for such a big name in HDD's.
If they make an expensive 'enterprise' type model - by all means try it, but their baseline products are not good.
If you just want to back up some info, remove it and safely store it - I'm sure it'll do you proud.
If you want it installed in your PC for daily use, buy a different make.
