My drive failed after about a year. I lost about 800GB of data. I would never buy this drive again. All my drives are WD (i've had one of their older versions fail on me as well) but I am bittely disappointed. 1 out of 5 stars. I can not praise this drive. In this day and age, drives should be reliable and although I do not expect them to last a life time, more than a year would be nice. I am back buying WD and I don't care how cheap this drive is.
One last thing you need to think about before you buy seagate. There is a well documented fault with these drives. Look up seagate "click of death". Apparently the drive gives off a very loud click noise before failing completely. I believe Seagate will replace the drive for you but what about your lost data? Want to take the risk? Had I known this before I bought mine I would have never bought it.
Now call me harsh but usually when something like this happens, I lose all faith in the company. I have now been put off completely from buying Seagate drives. You know what though? They deserve such treatment. There's no excuse and there are loads of companies ot there that can provide the same capacity but are more reliable. Look what happened to Amstrad. They had a faulty model pc back in the 80's and that was the end of Amstrad and cheap PCs. Seagate, take note!
A few months later I decided to add that WD drives fail as well. All drives ail eventually so what ever brand you buy, buy two and backup using software. It is now 2014 and at last we have ssd with no movable parts. A sep in the right direction and lightning quick. It still very expensive.
In my original review I couldn't praise this drive enough and again in my update a couple of months later, unfortunately disaster struck last weekend. We were watching a home movie on the drive through our tv when it started to make a clicking sound. The noise got worse over a couple of seconds - its the read arm!!! After a quick internet search and trying to contact Seagate my worst fears were confirmed - DEAD Drive Syndrome. The problem seems to be with the Hard drive to USB interface (not that Seagate admit it)and possibly the power connector. I'm one of the lucky ones and managed to get my info off the drive by opening it up and taking the drive out and putting it in a PC tower. I can't guarantee you'll have the same luck plus you need to be fairly good with computers insides to do this yourself and you'll void your warranty!!! but it may be worth a last ditch attempt at data recovery. Learnt my lesson now getting a NAS drive with 2x drives for mirroring :)
Ok, I got this a couple of weeks ago and its GREAT!!!!
I wanted it to use with my Sumvision for storing AVI files and photo's. I had to reformat the drive into FAT32 which I had expected after reading several other reviews and it works brilliantly!!!
I have over a couple of hundred movie files and I've lost count of how many music and photo files I have on it and still haven't got close to half filling it......AWESOME!!
If you have movie, music or photo files you need this External Drive, it just works and is nearly silent.
+++++++++++++ UPDATE ++++++++++++++++++
Had this for a while now and still loving it I recently brought a new Samsung TV and decided to switch back to NTFS as my Vista laptop seems to prefer this and now plug it directly into the TV via it's USB port. It works brilliantly with no audio or visual lag's. PLUS it goes into standby mode when not being used or if you turn the tv off and wakes up almost instantly when you access it, so no wasted electricity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being a bit of a tech head I did my research and downloaded a 3rd party software that formatted the system to FAT32 in 10 Seconds. You must get a 3rd party software to do this because for some unknown reason windows does not want you formating anything bigger than 32GB capacity to FAT32. (more info available on request)
I find that with the HDD in NTFS format transfer rates were at least 8mb/s slower than FAT32 and yet even the NTFS speed was acceptable so you can imagine I am very pleased now im running it at FAT32. Has been running now for about 10hours with constant usage as a stress test and it has stayed very cool and had no failures.
As for some of the comments on here about clicking or loud noises I have had none of these problems. HDD has been almost silent (if you listen really close to it you can hear it, but lets face it how often are you going to do that)
Product was slightly bigger than I expected but its not a major issue.
All in all a very good product, versitile across several formats with no flaws and at a very good price.
If your looking for a cheap 1TB no frills HDD this is the one to buy!
