This hard drive is not formatted for a Mac but takes less than 30 seconds to achieve this. When I was looking for a Mac formatted portable hard drive to act as a Time Machine for my MacBook Pro I noticed that they cost much more than this one. Seagate is famous for its Hard Drives and at £30 less than a Mac equivalent I decided to order. Feels good, tactile and very quiet but out of the box your Mac will not read it.

You need to follow this link [...] which explains exactly how to format it for the Mac.

How to Erase an internal or external drive that is 500 GB or larger and has already been setup with NTFS

Open the Disk Utility.
Select the drive.
Click Partition.
Under Volume Scheme, choose 1 Partition.
Choose Options.
Choose Apple Partition Map.
Click OK.
Click Apply.
Click the Partition button.
The drive will Erase. When it completes, the drive will mount on the Desktop.

Takes less than 30 seconds. Job done.

Picked up the 2TB version of this drive for use with my Xbox One as I was at 97% on my internal drive.

Setup is really quick and easy, plug it into the Xbox, power on, the Xbox will recognise the drive and you go through a quick setup process. In all you can get this setup in under a minute and once complete any new software can be installed to the drive automatically, you don't need to think about where to install things and you don't need an external power supply.

Looks good as well, not too much of an issue if using it with an Xbox, but if you want a good sized drive for carrying about this looks great.

Let me clarify that this review isn't out of spite, but is purely a reflection of my personal experience.

My experience is as a owner/user of 5 1-2 TB hard drives.
Decided to give Sea gate hard drives a try after an extremely unpleasant experience with their product from 6 years ago (1 TB hard drive), and I can't help but to shoot myself in the foot for not sticking with WD.

The sleek design of the drive is about the only positive thing from my experience so far. The drive either periodically loses connection whilst idle, or more frequently disconnects if i'm say, playing a video from it. I know that most hard drive brands have a rather loose connection (easy to wiggle/wobble) between the wire and the drive itself, but the sensitivity and the ease at which the drive disconnects when it gets touched or moved is ridiculous. I find myself constantly plugging and unplugging my drive whilst trying to watch videos in bed. For clarification, I own 3 computers (all below 3 years of age) and this is happening on all of them. Whilst this may not be applicable or relevant to most people who might be using this for document or backup type storage, if you plan to use your portable hard drive as a portable device (anywhere except lying stationary on the table), i highly recommend an alternate brand.

Edit* Decided to run diagnostics on the drive using chkdsk and Seagate's software (seatools), true enough there are bad clusters on this "brand new" drive, the diagnostic tools were also unable to repair or even complete a test on itself. FYI. Chkdsk shows- Disk read error c0000483

Seagate's STBX500200 500GB is an ideal hard drive for the average computer user who just wants to know which buttons to hit to get the desired result: a simple plug and play drive with no software to install, a more than adequate memory for most users and fast copying speeds. It's a simple drag and drop process, though the lack of an automatic backup might put some off. The only niggle is that every now and then you might need to unplug it and replug it if you're using an older computer to ensure the connection, but otherwise it's a fast and easy to use hard drive that's just as easy to recommend, BUT...

...when things go wrong, Seagate aren't a lot of help. After a couple of years of working without a hitch during a routine computer scan everything on the drive vanished (luckily I'd backed up most of the files on disc as well, being a belt and braces kind of user). Seagate's response to the problem? To direct me to a webpage that would diagnose if the data could be retrieved - not to actually retrieve the data, but to sell a data retrieval program. Of course, if that doesn't work I could always send it in to Seagate for them to repair at an unspecified sum.

So, good while it lasts - but not reliable enough.

I was surprised at the speed of this drive. It works straight out of the box, and is lightning fast. I get speeds of about 150 megabytes per second via USB 3.0 on average, and I've seen it go as fast as 200. So I copy entire mp3 albums in about a second. It's an attractive, portable drive which was much smaller than I expected. If you're looking for a fast, portable, simple drive, get this one.
