While these drives have a 720rpm, leading some decent performance, 170MBs R&W, the real issues are much deeper hidden! This drive actually use SMR technology, meaning write operations are extremely expensive, as you have to rewrite whole portion of a drive on each change. This leads to abysmal latency! My 6 wd red drives experience a latency up to 16ms when under heavy load, and this drive, due to the use of SMR experienced an unbelievable latency of over 5 seconds when there was a steady stream of tiny writes, along with some reads. And by writes, I just mean a log file! This was enough to grind the device to a halt, so while you can read the data at a good speed, accessing the data is a whole other issue.
The consequences of this were: my entire NAS became unfunctional. Due to the awful latency, the kernel was throwing panics, as surprisingly it didn’t expect an IO operation to take that long. Any program that I tried to use on it, for example I stored some media on the drive, to be used by Plex Media Server, it took 30 minutes to just detect 5 files.
Unless you are literally only using this drive for an archive, and you copy a file to it, and never touch the drive again, you would be much better suited with even cheaper drives, provided they don’t use SMR technology.
You'll need a 1gb usb stick and a screwdriver...
Firstly, sync your trophies and save points on the PS4 (just in case) although the yearly membership should save to the cloud.
Secondly, download the latest playstation update (around 800mb) from the official playstation website. Make sure you create a folder named 'PS4' then another inside it called 'UPDATE' before saving the file inside. Otherwise, the PS4 won't know what to look for when you put the USB stick in.
Thirdly, slide the glossy playstation cover left. Remove the one screw holding the hard drive in place. It's the bottom left one with the playstation logos on it. Slide the drive out, remove the four black side screws holding the drive on the tray. Swap it out with the new drive.
Hold the PS4 power button down for 7 secs and it will go into safe mode.
Fourthly, format the new HD before putting the USB stick in. Upload the software. Then the PS4 will be like new out of the box. Sign in and you'll see 1.77TB of free memory!!
You can clone the drive, copy the whole lot onto an external but I did it this way and worked fine.
There are some great you tube videos if you're still stuck.
The drive itself is a fantastic product, went for the 2TB and worth the extra money.
It gives me the option to change and upgrade the PS4 pro with swap out the 1TB later on...
Now my PS4 will last me a couple more years!
The applications shows 427.7GB that's 10 games with various memory requirements between 13 - 62gbs.
Sony actually expect people to do this hence why it is so easy to do. Also it states that it doesn't affect the warranty on your machine either!
It is so nice to not have to remove and reinstall games anymore, not to mention saves a lot of bandwidth and time with the ever increasing file size of games these days. Sure there are a few games which still benefit significantly from being on an SSD due to loading times (GTA 5 or Battlefield 1 for example), but the vast majority will be just fine on an HDD and I have plenty of space on my SSD now to store the odd game that I play regularly which would benefit from this.
No complaints speed, noise or read/write wise (if you're about to spend £300 on this you've no doubt already done your research like me and know this is one of the best around in all 3 of those areas anyway).
As long as this lasts me at least 10 years like my previous HDD has (and is still doing), I will be a very happy man.
*Just a side note - get this over the IronWolf Pro if you're a home user - the BarraCuda Pro is designed for home desktop use and both were the same price last time I checked, so no price advantage for either.
Both the 3TB and 5TB models have proven to be very reliable long-term with only one found DOA and another that failed on second use. No other failures have since occurred, hence the lack of concern with these. Although not yet extensively used, it is hoped that they will gfive good service for some years to come.
ADDENDUM - One of the units failed on second use. It was OK when partitioned and formatted but, when needed to transfer a large block of data, the partitioning had disappeared and could not be recreated. Returned for replacement, that unit has worked perfectly. The exact same situation had once occurred with one of two 3TB units ordered for the same purpose two years ago.
