- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 July 2023I like that this holds about a dozen sheets of toilet paper in the handle. It means that you always have some in an emergency.
The trowel blade is plastic so not too great on harder ground. But if you pick your spot well (and let’s face it - you should!), then this is the ideal trowel for hiking or wild camping.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2023Why list something with so much detail and then send a completely different product?!? It's not a "Hard anodized blade to Rockwell C 70" it's plastic! It's not a lifetime tool it's a cheaply made but well advertised sheep in wolfs clothing that I imagine all too soon will add to the pile of plastic we can't recycle.
Unfortunately for me my 14yo Scout has to have one for the next morning so I can't even return it. What a disappointment. I just wish I had the time earlier today to read the other reviews. Do not buy if you expect it to match the description.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2012Had one of these for a couple of years now & used it on & off, most usually for wild camping.
Certainly it's a great idea & the trowel action works well, whether for cat lats or scraping off turf to make a sunken fire pit (so one can replace the turf afterwards). Also, it IS light (although mine was a smidge over the claimed 100g).
However, I just wanted to reinforce what a previous review claimed (L.Booth) insofar as the metal button is very difficult to depress (required to retract/extend the handle). With cold (or possibly older) fingers I wouldn't say it's an option & I've resorted to using the rounded end of a tent peg or a key off my fob before now which is a bit of a nuisance & not ideal.
Also, the handle is "plugged" with a bit of plastic with two little sprung arms which hold it in place. Mine has lost a lot of its springyness & I don't think it'll last much longer as a useful end which means the hollow handle will then no longer be a closed container, although this probably won't be as much of an issue as you'd think...
The reason for this is bc whilst the manufacturers claim you can "store gas lighter/toilet tissues in handle", even if you fold the paper REALLY tightly, it's virtually impossible to get more than a dozen 2-ply sheets in, let alone a lighter. I don't know about other people, but 12 sheets of thin toilet paper ain't necessarily enough without getting personal!
HINT: The first time I used it, I squeezed as much paper as I could into the handle but then couldn't get it out! Eventually I levered it out with a screwdriver. Since then, I use a short piece of ribbon & sort of interweave it into my mini roll of loo paper, so that it just leaves an "easily-grabbable" end after you've inserted the paper. Pull on this & it becomes a doddle to get it out.
Frankly though, it's the paper OR the lighter & if you don't smoke you'll have to remember to carry one (or a box of matches) on your person when you go for a short walk... (BTW - this is required to burn the paper so as not to leave something which typically takes generations to degrade - as opposed to the months required for biodegradable materials).
Finally, the carry case which was supplied with mine was very lightweight (& flimsy) & failed after a while - most probably from the trowel blade corner poking into it. I just use an easily-replaceable plastic freeezer bag now. I normally wipe mine on the grass after use (it's only mud after all) but a bag keeps all the little bits of drying soil out of my pack.
Hope this helps!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 October 2023I bought this trowel for back-pacling (digging cat-holes) and It is nice and lightweight. The fact that the handle stores inside the length of the blade is great as it fits into my 'toilet' bag. However it is not capable of cutting through any roots so I would need to be very choosey about where I dig my holes - 200 feet from any water source, 200 feet from any footpath and now I have to find somewhere that has nothing growing!
It was a nice thought but I will probably revert to using the metal trowel that has served me well for several years.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 March 2013This is one of those things that anyone who's into wild camping should carry, it's small and light plus it comes with its own dry bag so it takes up hardly no space at all but it means you can be responsible if you need to lay a log in the woods. The handle is hollow so you can stow some paper and a lighter inside and the dry bag also has enough space for a pack of tissues so you know your not gonna get caught short. The blade of the trowel is strong and didn't struggle to make a small hole in frozen soil on a recent 3 day hiking trip. All in all I heartily recommend this product to all responsible campers.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 May 2023The item description says "Strong ultralight 6066 - T6 aluminium alloy Hard anodized blade to Rockwell C 70" but this is a plastic trowel "made with...nylon 66". Don't buy it if you want an aluminium trowel.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2022Typical of Sea to Summit to think about design
Not much you can say about digging a hole which it does just fine. Easy to hold and strong enough. Stand out for me is compact so it packs down and is easy to store plus I use internal space for spare lighter

I have used this shovel for a year now as a great camp shovel for the deserts of Utah. Did well, did not break and is pretty small when not in use. I would buy again

seems like it will serve the purpose well - the package had been clearly been opened previously.
