Well- paced plot with interesting characters. Very far-fetched coincidences, however, and mis-spellings, such as 'there' for 'their' were annoying.

This novel would be go if it was a start of a series!
It was a story of DS Macey which I enjoyed, as well as the other detective books by Michael Fowler. It was well written showing the personal side of life which was cleverly intermingled with her main case!
The only part I didn't like is as in all detective novels the main person doesn't get on with their boss.

I have enjoyed Mr Fowler's Hunter Kerr novels so I thought I'd give his new series a try and, surprise, I like it too. It starts with DS Scarlett Macey and her team apprehending an alleged rapist in a sting operation but with little to go on and a glib suspect it is touch and go until she persuades another victim to come forward. interspersed with this is the tale of two naive Lithuanian teenagers who are lured to London and forced into the sex trade and as this narrative unfolds a headless and handless female body is found stuffed into a suitcase and branded in such a way that it links it to the sex trade. The subplot is Scarlett's search for her sister Rose who went missing 11 years ago after her parents' murder.
Obviously the reader is able to make the link between the body and the two young girls long before the police because we have more information but it doesn't detract from the reading experience as the body is merely the start of an investigation into further murders and the illegal sex trade. It is an exciting read with plenty of action but some of the coincidences in the plot are a bit too hard to swallow and left me thinking yeah, right - I feel that if I mention exactly what I mean it would spoil other readers' enjoyment so you'll just have to take my word for it.
The author is a former policeman so the procedure is good and interesting although Scarlett tends to ignore it when it suits her. She is an interesting character.

I was disappointed that the female lead character did not match up to the authors male detectives. Her success depended very much on an old flame whose work schedule, amazing skills & contacts happily revolved round Scarletts' needs and was a little too contrived for my taste. Skip this one but do read the Hunter Kerr series.

This is the first Scarlet book I have read. I was not really drawn into this story. I was not persuaded that she was a strong enough personality for the rank she held compared to other DI'si have read. It was easy reading and I will probably follow her in another book in the future.

Great read start to finish. Love the relationships formed and that it dealt with believable issues. Good to get an insight into real detective work as a team and not just the one hero managing everything

Five stars as like other reads of Michael Fowler I found it extremely difficult to put down. Now having to wait impatiently for the next DS Macey encounters.
