If you have a son or daughter (however old!) involved in Scouting, I recommend you buy this book for them.
It's inspiring stuff. My non-scouting daughter has already asked to go camping and the book only arrived this morning!
This hard back copy of Scouting Skills is the perfect one stop reference point for such a demand. It will not cover in detail every part of the outdoors experiences you might encounter but it will do enough to help you once you are out there to enjoy every bit of way.
If you ever wondered how to prepare for a hike, what to pack, what to do out once there and how to experience the outdoors this is the book for you, be a young member of the scout movememnt, an adult leader or volunteer or just an enthusiast.
Hikes, maps, compass, clouds, winds, weather, camping, tools, camping furniture and preparations, first response, activities; the list goes on, they are all there, in separate chapters that tie together like a rif knot.
One small point I want to make is in regards to bird, insect and tree recognition. There is only a handfull of examples. I do not expect a tree or bird atlas of Britain but I thought 2-3 pages rather than almost one for each would look a bit better. Still if you do need to bird watch insect watch or tree watch, there are more specialised books out there, I guess it is beyond the scope of this book.
I have found that this is a good book for any section in scouting, from Beavers, to Cubs, to Scouts, to Explorers and Network. I am sure there are more detailed and specific publications out there for activities; e.g. for kayak, hill walking, survival etc.
Isn't the best way to learn about these things is to experience them yourself? No doupt this book will give you a good advice and get you ready to do so.
My sons a scout and although he hasn't stuck his nose into the book I have and have found it full of bits like: basic knots and campfires(what a surprise), but there's also stuff on canoes and kayaks, first aid and map readng. There's also advice on choosing tents, sleeping bags and backpacks, all useful stuff if your new to it.
So a good back up if your child doesn't rememeber what they've been told, and if your planning meetings for cubs or scouts.
