This is a terriffic book to dip in and out of. It's been a great resource for me and my cub pack as my outdoor scouting skills are somewhat rusty and needed a quick brush up! A wide range of skills, equipment lists and good practice are all covered in this well illustrated book. It would make a great gift for either child or adult who is interested in scouting.

Takes me back to when I was a scout and Scout Handbooks actually included useful information.

If you have a son or daughter (however old!) involved in Scouting, I recommend you buy this book for them.

It's inspiring stuff. My non-scouting daughter has already asked to go camping and the book only arrived this morning!

A clear & concise instruction manual with good illustrations,a must for those requiring a manual for instruction,or as in my case a refresher for my distant memories. It enables the reader to view the new & exciting developments and inspires potential programs that can & should be available to our young people.

As a Scout Leader I find this book very useful, with that in mind we purchased a copy for our young nephews. One is a Cub Scout and the other a Scout, they have both found it a good source of inspiration and they are enjoying their respective Scouting careers with its help.

My 9 year old has not put this down since he got it for Christmas. Packed full of essential camping and survival basics I fear I will be busy trekking and camping soon! Highly recommended for the outdoor types.

The scouting game is a very broad one with each member challenged to take part in such a diverse range of activities.
This hard back copy of Scouting Skills is the perfect one stop reference point for such a demand. It will not cover in detail every part of the outdoors experiences you might encounter but it will do enough to help you once you are out there to enjoy every bit of way.
If you ever wondered how to prepare for a hike, what to pack, what to do out once there and how to experience the outdoors this is the book for you, be a young member of the scout movememnt, an adult leader or volunteer or just an enthusiast.
Hikes, maps, compass, clouds, winds, weather, camping, tools, camping furniture and preparations, first response, activities; the list goes on, they are all there, in separate chapters that tie together like a rif knot.
One small point I want to make is in regards to bird, insect and tree recognition. There is only a handfull of examples. I do not expect a tree or bird atlas of Britain but I thought 2-3 pages rather than almost one for each would look a bit better. Still if you do need to bird watch insect watch or tree watch, there are more specialised books out there, I guess it is beyond the scope of this book.
I have found that this is a good book for any section in scouting, from Beavers, to Cubs, to Scouts, to Explorers and Network. I am sure there are more detailed and specific publications out there for activities; e.g. for kayak, hill walking, survival etc.
Isn't the best way to learn about these things is to experience them yourself? No doupt this book will give you a good advice and get you ready to do so.

Scouting skills is colourful, well laid out and explains things. It lacks the personality and innocence of "Scouting for boys" and the fun of the "Dangerous book for boys" although it covers much the same ground as both. This is a stoic manual created for a politically correct world by a committee determined to keep things sterile and safe. The information is well presented and the photography supports the subject matter. It should have been called the Scouting Skills manual. Its highly clinical feel left me cold. For the younger reader I would buy the Dangerous book for boys every time, for the older reader Scouting for boys, Scouting Skills lacks something to make it a great book or even a good read.

The book is just what it says.
My sons a scout and although he hasn't stuck his nose into the book I have and have found it full of bits like: basic knots and campfires(what a surprise), but there's also stuff on canoes and kayaks, first aid and map readng. There's also advice on choosing tents, sleeping bags and backpacks, all useful stuff if your new to it.
So a good back up if your child doesn't rememeber what they've been told, and if your planning meetings for cubs or scouts.
