Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 Paperback – 26 April 2012
Scott Kelby, the man who changed the “digital darkroom” forever with his groundbreaking, best-selling The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography―how to take professional-quality shots using the same tricks today’s top digital pros use (and it’s easier than you think). These aren’t books of theory, full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. These are books on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. Each page covers a single concept on how to make your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you’re tired of shots that look “okay,” and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, “Why don’t my shots look like that?” then these are the books for you.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 August 2012Having read Scott's Lightroom 4 book (which I highly recommend) I thought I'd try these books and have not been dissappointed.
I guess you could classify me as an "advanced amateur" and in my view these books are aimed at either photographers like me or more advanced/semi pro/pro photographers. Let me explain why by way of example: one of the tips in one of the books (I can't now remember which -may be book 1) concerns trying to get pin sharp focussing of the eyes in portrait photography. Scott doesn't explain that you should first lock focus onto the eye and then recompose the shot (we know that anyway), but he does go on to explain how you can use a different method to ensure pin sharp results particularly when using fast lenses with wide apertures such as f1.4 etc. If none of that made sense to you then I'd suggest the book may be a little advanced for you. Conversly, if you not only understood it but am intrigued as to how to improve your success rate for getting pin sharp results then buy the books.
I have to confess that I probably knew about 50% of what is in these books but nevertheless still well worth buying for the other half.
I bought the kindle edition and thought it really good value for 4 books for just under £30 (this was the price at time of purchase - August 2012). The only downside is that, unlike the kindle version for his Lightroom 4 book, the fact that all the images are black & white (kindle version only) means you cannot always fully see the effect he is trying to demonstratere. This didn't really bother me but I could imagine some people finding this really annoying and demanding their money back. Perhaps best to spend an extra £10 and get the colour hardback/paperback.
To conclude, well written, really easy to understand books that cover just about any photographic situation you could find yourself in. It is just like having a pro photographer stood next to you clearly explaining what you should do. A real good reference library of information I will no doubt keep referring back to. Thoroughly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 October 2016An outstanding, informative guide to photography.
Whatt should you expect: Brief (1-2 A5 pages) of tips on how to photograph a particualrly scene. Or how to shoot in this or that environment. Short easy to understand and easy to use tips. I think it's best to new to moderatly advanced photographers, but maybe even pros can leran a few tips and tricks.
You can easily incorparete these tricks into your normal methods.
I think many of the tips he gives are no-nonsense honest stuff.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Good books to start with for DSLR Novice.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2013An expensive book but it does seem to cover everything you would wish to know about digital photography. I wasted money on cheaper books before this only to be disappointed because they did not cover enough to satisfy my hunger for learning the subject. I have not read even half this book yet but it looks like it will really help me in my study.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 September 2013If you are approaching this whole DSLR subject from the near novice level you need a book about the mechanics first. Taking a picture that has artistic merit or interest is of course the end requirement, however knowing the mechanics of how to achieve a good picture has to come first. Chances are that if you have bought a DSLR and have an itch to use it properly but are a novice, then what you first want to know is what are the technicalities. F stop? Exposure? Aperture? Once beyond point and shoot - hence the purchase of a DSLR - these mystery words need defining.
All four books roll into one and eventually you do get to know the above things, however it's well into the book(s) before you do. There is also a lot of jokey preamble which adds nothing and I get the impression that what the author is doing is padding this out to stretch the subject over four books instead of one or two.
The other thing is that the technical information is out of date. The author tellingly writes that you don't need any more than 10 megapixels unless you are going to paper a wall. Of course today even the most humble of point and shoot cameras have far more than than that and DSLR's are fast congregating around the 24 megapixel level as a matter of course. The author fails to note that higher megapixels allows a far greater zooming and cropping ability without loss of definition can clarity. The choice of cameras is limited to Nikon and Cannon although I admit that the techniques are the same for all.
What this series of books does do is guide you into good picture taking. Good techniques, what to look for and how to get a shot of your chosen subject be it landscape or person.
Truth is though that these are simply not concise or informative enough. A far better book is Understanding Exposure.

The Mobile TrekkerReviewed in the United States on 20 December 20125.0 out of 5 stars Great for amateurs
I started shooting over 30 years ago. While I have always been enthusiastic about photography, I've never spent much time learning how to shoot better. I have followed some photo sites & blogs on & off, and a couple of friends are pro photographers, so I've picked up some things from them. Even so, I am finding Kelby's book series worthwhile. His writing style is easy and fun and the tips are easy to follow. I'm still on book 1, but I'm enjoying it. Many of the tips and insights aren't new to me, but they also haven't completely worked themselves into my DNA in shooting to the point that they are automatic, so the reminders are helpful. I plan to read through this slowly, practicing some of these tips & insights as I go along, so that I can be more intentional about incremental improvement.
If you are a hobbyist like me, or if you are just getting started, this series of books from Kelby is fantastic. You really can't beat the price, and you are sure to learn some new things, or have some old, forgotten things brought to the fore. Highly recommended.
Frank A. DunnReviewed in Canada on 22 October 20125.0 out of 5 stars Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set (4 books)
I have been involved in photography since I was about eight years of age, some sixty four years ago and still have my original "Box Brownie". Over the years I have any number of film cameras of varying prices and lenses from Lieca's to Linhoff, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta and several off brand names cameras. Once with a 5 x 7 press that I could not afford to feed. For over fourty years I have had my own darkroom as part of our home and enjoyed many hours with our children playing in the dark. Since I switched to digital I have only taken four pictures with a film camera. With the computer programs and the digital cameras and printing them at home I now have 180 albums on the shelf in my rec room, so photography is part of our life. It is my wife and myself that is our joint hobby. We now only have two Canon cameras and I have the range of lenses covered with 18 - 55 mm, 18 - 200 mm and 50 - 500 mm and the latest Canon has 18.4 megapixel that will handle making poster size prints with very little degrading of the image.
I thought that I knew a lot about photography and read books and a short stint in the Identification Section with the RCMP taught me a lot about the mechanics of using equipment and lighting, but I really never had a full appreciation of the use of light until I read Scott Kelby's books. I have some great photographs but I believe that the good ones were mostly accidents that turned out great. When you take a hundred photographs surely you will have one that is a keeper and all things come together. For the past fifteen years we take a week holiday in the mountains around Banff, Alberta and do nothing but try to outdo one another in capturing the scenery. With the aid of Kelby's books I can see nothing but improvement in the quality of our photographs. They are a treasure of good ideas and easy to understand instructions.

Die Bücher von Scott Kelby sind super geschrieben und nicht einfach eine steife Anleitung. Er schreibt sehr praxisnah und gibt viele Tips. Ich habe sehr viel von den Büchern gelernt und lese sie gerne.

mattghedReviewed in Italy on 19 August 20135.0 out of 5 stars Consigliato a tutti!!

tux81Reviewed in France on 26 January 20134.0 out of 5 stars Progressif et complet
