In the first episode Rachel is seriously upset about being dumped by her married lover, Nick who continues to feature as the series progresses in an increasingly prominent role. Rachel's detection skills were obviously lacking as they had been going out for two years and it had escaped her notice that he was married with kids which seems a tad unlikely. Their first case seems to somewhat mirror Rachel's personal life as it involves a guy cheating on his wife whose girlfriend is found hanged. The various murders investigated by the pair have interesting twists. One involves a possible murder of her spouse by wife and boyfriend, just lacking a body whilst another concerns a serial killer whose activities go back as far as 40 years!
All this makes for highly entertaining viewing.Read more ›
I look forward to seeing the next series
Oh Boy (to quote the late, great Buddy Holly), was I glad I did. A very, very good series with strong characters extremely well played by the two stars, Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp. Having seen the series, I now can't imagine anyone else in those roles.
I also felt that (something I don't often say in a review) the writer(s) deserve a lot of praise for both the story line and the characterisations. For a change, they weren't based around the Cagney and Lacey type characters with one overly strong willed and the other very feminine.
Well done to all - Now, another series PLEASE and don't make us wait too long!!!
There were a few things that I found hit and miss in the beginning (how could a detective be with somebody for two years and not realise that he had a wife and children??), but overall I find the series entertaining and watchable with very good acting, good dialogue, authenticity (it was created by real-life former detective Diane Taylor and writer sally Wainwright) and some decent crime stories in the mix.
The dynamic duo has been likened to Cagney & Lacey, I personally don't see that much of a similarity, but I like their chemistry and the play between the (on the surface) straight-laced Scott and the rebellious Bailey.
I also like the authenticity of the series where the leads are allowed lives outside the job and although they are good at their jobs and overworked, it's not exactly a calling for either of them and they're free to develop other sides of their characters. Even if Janet Scott DID became a copper because of the unsolved murder of a childhood friend, Veronica...
Another character that deserves a mention is DI Gill Murray (Amelia Bullmore) who also does a great job as the strict, but at times (unintentionally) comic, leader of the team.
I look forward to following this pair on their future ventures and also look forward to seeing where they are heading with the Veronica story in the background as Scott has taken up the case again from the retired detective who was originally worked on it and Bailey will help her out as she has nothing much else to do - what with being homeless and taking refuge with Scott and her family after her ploy to get her ex's flat as part of a blackmailing scheme failed miserably like most of the rest of her personal life.
I recommend you give it a try
We buy this type of program which has advertisements through it on the TV
and then watch it at our own speed....this one we finished in the same week
it arrived. Six episodes of life, loves and grinding hard work.
A very close contender to 'Law and Order', and how great to see Women as they really are and living and working in an environment that we can all relate to and understand.
GREAT!!!WHEN IS THE NEXT SERIES??
