This is a very useful guide book. Whilst not as detailed as some guide books, all essential information is there and the illustrations are both attractive and informative. I have not spotted any factual errors (at least so far), although information can and does change. I am a Scot and have bought a copy of this book for non-Scottish friends planning a holiday in Scotland. It would also make a good souvenir of a Scottish holiday.

Poor For The Scottish Islands!
We bought this guide when we were going on holiday to the Isle Of Skye and Perthshire. On the whole the guide was pretty good, but irritatingly there was very poor information on the Isle Of Skye (only 2 pages, of which 50% is a picture of some Loch)!
So, we ended up having to consult a £5.99 Ordnance Survey Map instead!
Fortunately the guide proved useful (luckily) when we arrived at Perthshire. There was very detailed info from a Whiskey Distillery (The Famous Grouse Experience) to
Glamis Castle (The Queen Mother's Childhood Home).
So on the whole I give this Guide Book 7.5/10

We were looking for a Guide for things to do in Glasgow and the surrounding area and happened upon this book ! It provides an excellent guide to the whole of Scotland, even covering areas near to where we live that we never knew about ! The town center maps that are provided are very accurate and clearly understood, the Glasgow maps saved us getting lost on more than one occasion. This book is a must not only for the foreign tourist but the Scottish day tripper too !

I have a large number of these travel guides. What I like about them is their format – each book gives an overview (rather than lots of detail). It provides a summary of what is on offer. Inside is not just the obvious i.e. the Top 10 sights to see. Also you get things like the Top 10 museums & galleries, Top 10 markets, Top 10 Arts & Crafts, Top 10 events etc. – even the Top 10 things to avoid. That makes them very useful, and a unique approach to travel guides. I use them to decide what to do, and then use another book (or a website) to give me more detail if I need that.

This book covers, for example:
 Edinburgh Castle
 The Royal Mile
 National Gallery of Scotland
 National Museum of Scotland
 Glasgow Science Centre
 Isle of Skye
 Loch Ness & the Great Glen
 The Cairngorms
(This is some, not all)

Top 10 topics include:
 Top 10 Moments in History
 Top 10 Scottish Inventions
 Top 10 Cultural Events
 Top 10 Lochs
 Top 10 Munros
 Top 10 Walking Routes
(This is some, not all)

The book in its physical format is small - just small enough to fit inside a DL envelope (i.e. the standard white envelope, designed to accept a sheet of A4 paper folded twice). It is actually a few centimetres shorter than a DL envelope. This compact size makes it easy to fit into your pocket.

This book can’t provide detail – it can provide `the big picture'. I now normally take two travel guides with me – a DK Top 10 one like this and a detailed travel guide, to get the best of both worlds. If you just have a detailed travel guide, you can miss out on things that you wish you had visited.

Eyewitness Top 10 are my guidebooks of choice and have accompanied me on many holidays in different locations. They are small and portable - although the description 'pocket sized' is maybe stretching it a bit. A roomy raincoat pocket yes, but don't try to cram into your jeans! They are also very robust with tough, waterproof covers (important for rain prone countries like Scotland) and good quality paper pages. They can withstand the rigours of travel without tearing or disintegrating. The visual format is immediately attractive and makes them easy and pleasurable to read, and the 'top 10' format is ideal for busy travellers with limited time.

The actual information isn't in the sort of depth you'd find in a big guidebook, naturally, but it's enough to get you around and you can look up more detail in a bigger book or on the internet once you get home - or even when out since you don't need to worry about roaming charges if you're a UK resident. The book covers the top 10 highlights of the country in detail - these being Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, Kelvingrove museum in Glasgow, National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, Royal Museum/Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, Glasgow Science Centre, Loch Ness, Isle of Skye, Glencoe, Culzean Castle, and the Cairngorms. There's a selection of assorted top 10s by topic - lochs, gardens, fishing places, attractions for children, walking routes, moments in history, and many more. Then each area of Scotland gets its own section of area specific top 10s. The book ends with top 10s of practical advice, covering transport, currency, safety, electricity, weather, shopping etc.

Every section is laid out in an easy to read way and illustrated with beautiful colour photographs, that make navigation easy and reading a pleasure.
